Madrid has vineyards of its own, though they are little known outside the region. D.O. Vinos de Madrid covers the south and west of the Community in four subzones: Arganda, Navalcarnero, San Martín de Valdeiglesias and El Molar. On the slopes of the Sierra de Gredos, old-vine Garnacha gives fresh, elegant reds, while two local white grapes stand out: Albillo Real and Malvar.
A few hours north of the capital lies Ribera del Duero, where Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino, makes intense, barrel-aged reds with great ageing potential. Rioja brings the classic style of crianza, reserva and gran reserva, the wine of family lunches and celebrations. And in Rueda, Verdejo produces the fresh, aromatic whites poured in almost every bar in Madrid.
