Arzuaga La Planta 2024

This dry red wine from D.O. Ribera del Duero is a single-varietal Tempranillo crafted by the Arzuaga Navarro winery. It features an aromatic profile of ripe red and black fruits, notes of coffee and spices, with a firm structure and well-defined tannins on the palate.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Tempranillo
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Ribera del Duero
  • Winery: Arzuaga Navarro
  • Soil / Altitude: Clay-limestone, 911 m altitude
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 6 months in oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes originate from the Finca La Planta vineyard, situated at an altitude of 911 meters in the heart of the region. The clay-limestone soil and the continental climate promote balanced ripening and a notable concentration of aromas.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest, the grapes undergo cold maceration prior to temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine is then aged for six months in French and American oak barrels.

This red wine paired well with a seafood paella, in Spain. The wine was served cold, on a summers day it made perfect sense. I liked the dry taste but did not get many fruit tastes. I did note a leathery undertone.

Deep ruby with expressive aromas of ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum, layered with violet, licorice, cedar and subtle sweet spice. On the palate it is juicy and well-structured, with concentrated dark fruit, fresh acidity and fine, polished tannins. The oak adds depth without overpowering the fruit, while the finish is smooth, balanced and persistent. A youthful Ribera del Duero with plenty of character and very good drinkability.

Much better than the Vivino rating. Strong bouquet with notes of oak, blackberry, chocolate and red fruit. Some people taste leather and I can see that if you drink several glasses. Pair with Spanish tapas and paella.

Leméac Q2-2026 Backlog #10/15! 😉 A producer that I like very much but it was my first time trying their entry-level La Planta. HTT! 🍷 100% Tempranillo. Aged 6 months in oak. Young and accessible cuvée. Raspberry, black cherry, oak, cacao, and coffee on the nose. The palate adds plum and spice. Medium-bodied, with fresh acidity and ripe tannins. The finish is medium-long. A fresh, aromatic, well-made young RdD that over-delivers for an entry cuvée. Good value! 👍🏻

7/4/26 Zapote in London for dinner with Rob. Deep-ruby-red in the glass, this wine has a bouquet of blackberry, purple plum and clove. It is soft at first sip, followed by a sensation of fullness as plush tannins fill the palate. Flavors of black cherry, cassis, caramel, anise and a touch of dried thyme linger on the taste buds. — Mike DeSimone
