My first encounter with arguably the best winery in the Canary Islands - Envínate (translates as “wine yourself”). It is a project founded by 4 friends, who studied enology at university and, after graduating in 2005, formed winemaking consultancy, which evolved into Envínate. Taganan is a mostly Listán Negro based blend with small amounts of Mulata, Listan Gacho & Malvasia Rodado. 2022 vintage. ⤵️

Listan Negro driven autochtonous blend from one of the most exciting producers in Tenerife. Smoke, hematogen, red currant, basalt, barberry, goji, rooibos tea, new leather, white pepper. Red berry, sage and volcanic aroma concoction. Elegant, precise and vertical, while aromas are laser-focused and highly concentrated. Striking acidity. Dusty, powdery, tiny tannin. Marketed simply as Listán Negro, it is actually a traditional field blend from numerous tiny, ancient parcels around the village of Taganana on Tenerife's rugged northeast coast. Spontaneously fermented. Aged in different sized (225-500L) used French oak and concrete. Red berries, fresh herbs, tomatoes and olive. Underwood and forest fruits. Pale ruby, orange on rims Medium- notes of smoke, fresh sour cherries, rose petals, tiny bit barny but very manageable, some mineral, reductive notes like stone. Youthful on the nose Palate: dry, pronounced raspberries, cranberries, bringing a high, bright acidity. Fairly mineral, but still fruit dominant at this age. Medium- tannins, medium bodied. Some lingering sweetness but enough acidity to back it up. High intensity, long finish. Very good village level listan negro with lots of potential to age.

Barberry

2025-07-01 Tasted blind. Had me ping-ponging between Pinot and Nebbiolo, even wandered into South African Pinot territory. Turns out Téganan had a textbook vintage while the rest of Tenerife struggled. Dark chocolate wrapped around cherry and violet, still young and showing some pomace grip. But hey, this is beautiful. There's proper tension here - elegant but also refuses to be polite about it. The kind of wine that makes blind tasting both humiliating and magical.
