D.O.Ca. Rioja
In 1991 Rioja became Spain’s first qualified designation of origin (D.O.Ca.). Its vineyards stretch along the Ebro across La Rioja, Álava and Navarre, in three zones: Rioja Alta, with an Atlantic climate and fine, long-lived wines; Rioja Alavesa, with limestone soils and fruit-driven, elegant reds; and Rioja Oriental, warmer and home to Garnacha.
The main grape is Tempranillo, blended with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. Among the whites, Viura, Malvasía and Tempranillo Blanco lead the way, producing both fresh whites and characterful barrel-aged whites.
