Oxer Bastegieta Matalaz 2025

A dry red wine from the D.O. Ca. Rioja region, crafted by Oxer Wines. It features aromas of red fruit and floral notes, balanced by a fresh acidity and a subtle, refined palate.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Ca. Rioja
  • Winery: Oxer Wines
  • Soil / Altitude: Pebble soils
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: Aged in used French oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes originate from old vineyards aged between 50 and 80 years in Lapuebla de Labarca. These vines grow in pebble soils with very low yields, cultivated using organic and regenerative farming methods.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Vinification follows a minimal intervention approach to preserve the authentic character of the terroir. The wine is then aged in used French oak barrels, ensuring a well-integrated and subtle wood influence.

@Can Domo-Santa Eulária des Riu, Ibiza. Rioja Alavesa blend of Tempranillo 70/ Graciano, Viura, Mazuelo 10 each. 50-80yo vines. Aged for 7m in 65HL oak vats. 20% whole bunch. 13% abv Garnet. Lovely nose of dark bramble fruit, prunes, licorice, baking spices, licorice, balsamics and damp earth. M(+) body, m/m(+) acidity, m tannins. Dry, mouthcoating and elegant palate. Minerals, earthiness, balsamics, bitter cocoa & crushed stones. Long lasting. Another brilliant juice from Oxer! Paired w/roasted eggplant ⏩

Fruity nose, soft in the mouth but definitely lacks some aroma and strength. Maybe too young but not a first good impression. sour cherry

A medium bodied Rioja that’s perfect for lighter and leaner fare. Full in the mouth with jammy and res fruit notes but no noticeable astringency. Noticeable notes of oak, jam, dried fig.

Nose has oak, plum, raspberry, leather and cherry. Palate is still young and awkward with a sharp acidity, but there’s already red fruit, blackberry, blueberry, butter, strawberry, vanilla and a spicy finish. Definitely worth a revisit down the road, this 2023 is much too young in May’25 but I decided to take one for the team here 🤘🏻

Huge barnyard nose with a hint of fruit underneath. Light on the palate with soft tannins and a semi-sweet lean. Quick finish, but that rustic, earthy aroma steals the show.

Wine needs to breathe initally and let its strong leather aroma spread. Wine is quite intense and dry, very well balanced and with a long aftertaste.
