Oxer Bastegieta Kalamity Blanco 2023

Oxer Bastegieta Kalamity Blanco 2023 is a dry white wine from the D.O. Ca. Rioja appellation, crafted by Oxer Wines. It offers an aromatic profile of lime, orange blossom, mineral undertones, and green almond, balanced by vibrant acidity and a long, concentrated finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Malvasia, Viura, Calagraño, Torrontés, Maturana Blanca, Garnacha Blanca
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Ca. Rioja
  • Winery: Oxer Wines
  • Soil / Altitude: Clay-limestone and alluvial in Rioja Alavesa and Alta
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 10 months in 600-liter oak barrels / High cellaring potential

The vineyard

The grapes originate from old vineyards in Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta, specifically in the villages of Elvillar and Cárdenas. These white varieties grow co-planted among red vines, drawing character from the diverse soils and microclimates of these historical subregions.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

This white wine undergoes ageing for 10 months in 600-liter oak barrels, following a Burgundian-inspired approach. This method enhances its structure and complexity while preserving the natural freshness of the local grape varieties.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a unique age-worthy wine for your cellar, this highly limited production white is an excellent choice. Its ability to develop gracefully in the bottle guarantees a complex tasting experience over time. You can buy Oxer Bastegieta Kalamity Blanco 2023 online directly from our shop.

Sweet spice. Silky. Soft. No jam. Has some minerality and freshness but a bit too luxurious for my taste.

Deep golden-yellow color in the glass! On the nose aroma of ripe lemon, mandarin, chamomile, beeswax and a hint of flint, complemented by lime blossom and a delicate touch of vanilla! On the palate great depth and concentrated power, lively acidity in the very intense finish! Cheers!

Somm told me this is a modern style white Rioja made by Oxer Bastegieta with a Viura based field blend. Has a great texture and a bit of saline acidity and paired beautifully with seafood. The nose is elegant and subtle with some floral notes and pear and some minerality. On the palate, it is medium bodied and creamy with the French oak well integrated with mostly fruit and that mineral note coming out. Long finish. Needs time, let it breathe if you can wait.

Stoked to try one of the most sought-after producers in 🇪🇸 these days. Ultra-contemporary, brilliant wines 👏 Rioja Alta and Alavesa. Viura, Malvasia and way more, from 13 plots, the same ones for the red and white flagships. 12m in big Austrian oak. Ripe yellow fruit, pear, sweet tobacco and turmeric. Much going on and original, too. Intense palate, showing grip, texture, breadth and saline length. 95 13% abv.

2022 Lemon merengue, lemon zest, green apple, butteriness, brioche. Slight minerality at the back end.

It starts with a floral nose with zest and vanilla. Palate is creamy and citrusy with a wonderful mouthfeel, there’s 13.5% of the fun stuff and white chocolate vibes complemented by pineapple and grapefruit. This one went down beautifully with salmon and black rice risotto. Very complex and gastronomical white, albeit not entirely affordable. A great drop indeed 🤘🏻

I love Oxer’s whites and besides his very first made Marko Gure which I haven’t tried, the only other I haven’t tried is this Kalamity Blanco. He states this as his Grand Cru Blanco. Firstly, the minerality is damn sexy! I love it. But even after more than an hr of decanting, it’s too young to fully express itself. There is lemon and stonefruit on nose, and then sea salt and wood. Oak still stands at the forefront for now. Mouthfeel is superbbb. Finish comes delayed but longgg thereafter. Maybe revisit in 2 days..

Oxer wines, mamma mia! Fresh, elegant, citrusy, lemon, jam, butter, brioche, oak, pear, apple, lime, pineapple, black cherry, plum, on the nose. Good minerality and acidity on the mouth! Superb wine and has a future!! Will age it for maximum 5 -7 years.
