Best yet, lots smoother than 2009 vintage. Deep purple, blend of Tempranillo 94% and CS 4%. Oaky notes (Tobacco and vanilla ). Black fruits (plum, blackberries and blueberries). Evolving into earthy notes (leather, smoke and hazelnut). Very smooth, silky and complex on palate. Med + body, bold with high but well balanced tannins and acidity with extended aftertaste. Great lamb and aged beef.

Brigs Iberian Unicorns - 15 of 25 - Unicos Flight Three 90's vintages of Unico were the centrepiece of the lunch. First time tasting Vegas Sicilia's finest. Huge weight of expectation that was convincingly met. Pristine and peerless Tempranillo w decades ahead of them. Comparatively speaking, 96 was nearest peak. Best drinking today. A touch less power, but there was an elegance, resolve + wisdom about it. Some of the smoky oak had fallen away leaving dried earth + slightly burnt cherry bakewell tart.

The most elegant and lightest of a Unico vertical last Friday, this '96 has remarkable purity, combining smoky spicy dark fruit with freshness and acidity. A lovely wine, yet next to the '95 and '98 this seemed to me to be the least expressive of the 3. Opinions varied among the group, perhaps illustrating the downside of opening too many great bottles together when any one of these 90s Unicos might have made a weekend. Conscious of a coconut note revisiting the Unicos after the Bordeaux flight.

Vertical 3 vintages of Unico organised by @Robbie Priddle and originally intended as the centrepiece of our Iberian Day (which escalated quickly). On reflection I couldn’t separate them so identical notes. All wines in pristine condition. The definition and complexity is jaw-dropping. Remarkable how sweet, fresh, bright and red the fruit is. Perfumed warm blueberries. Polished leather and wood. Beautiful sweet spices. 5hr decant and continued to evolve in glass. Remarkable wines.

The second Único of the flight and the best. This is wine heaven, simply out, a magical wine. I actually didn’t take notes and just put “F#%$ 5.0” and enjoyed the moment. Such class and elegance in a wine that gives a little bit of everything without any effort. So grateful to the opportunity 🙌🏼

Opaque garnet w/ brick edges. Sweet, dark, stemmy blackcurrant fruit; leather, salt, ash, dark dried prunes and tobacco. M(+) abv, tannin and body; m. acidity. Pronounced sweet black and red cherries; sweet spices and heavenly oak. Pure elegance! A magical wine.

WOTN. Tasting all of the Vegas we would use for Vega Paella, I declared that this would be the Wine Of The Night, and I stand by that. The wine had an unusually long finish (which I look for in a wine), but this was more like a Margaux than a Tempranillo. It had a delicate yet firm grasp on everything a wine should be. Rich cola flavors, aided by that firm Tempranillo grasp.
