Fab. From our gran canary visit. Nose is volcanic cement and honeysuckle, delicate. Lemon tangerine acidity, mineral (giving me electrolytes with salinity), some oak vanilla, medium or + body? Nice finish to a fairly acidic wine. Vanilla honeysuckle meets sharp island lemons, steeped in volcano 😉

First vijariego blanco I’ve tried from Gran Canaria. On the nose it’s a Riesling, big hit of petrol, takes quite a bit too open on the mouth. Petrol again, very oily, low acidity, lime, mango and apricot, honey, quite aromatic, perfumed and floral. Really nice but the last glass after more than an hour of opening went reeeeeealky flat?? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Very possibly the best white we tried in the Canary Islands. Dry and earthy, with powerful notes of mushroom and minerals but in no way unbalanced. Apple and citrus as well. We paired it with fish as part of a tasting menu.

Vijariego is the variety here, of which there are ~475ha planted in the Canary Islands where it’s high acidity is useful given the warm climate. Med lemon, slightly cloudy. M+ aroma intensity w. lemon zest, orange rind, nectarine, apricot skin & almond shell. Slightly oxidative w. honeyed notes & acacia flower. Slightly saline w. oyster shell & salted cashew. Developing. Dry. Zesty w. crisp m+ acid, lemon zest, orange rind, pineapple & tangy Haribo. Salted nuts w. almond. M(-) alc, med body w. a waxy m+ finish.

Blind tasted. Got close with a volcanic wine, then Canaries. But Vijariego Blanco?! Never heard of it. But it's delicious. Floral, pear, mandarin, slightly oxidised on the nose. But bone dry, high acid, mineral palate. Green apple skin finish.

David Silva’s new wine project on Gran Canaria and a grape I’ve never heard of, Vijariego. Barrel fermented and aged on lees. From sunny south facing slopes but has retained good acidity. Reminded me a bit of Chenin with some hints of Savagnin; ripe apple and pear, smoky rocks, mandarin orange. Chewy texture and pleasant bitterness; interesting stuff.
