This has that ethereal transportive quality that makes wine so special. It takes me to a warm late-evening in Sevilla. Beautiful wine. Traditional Rioja, until hit of oak on the nose. Then through cocoa into deep blackberry, black cherry, black plum and some stewed red cherry, cranberry, Victoria plum, vanilla, clove, cedar but always present oak and cocoa. Vibrant high acidity, medium body, grippy tannins, medium alcohol, long finish.

Sanguine velvet balsa sawdust hibiscus coffee chocolate spice ginger Black Forest gateau aromas. Black cherry rich and black plum ebullient, hint of sage and hedgerow. Palate plenty spicy in the lush heady black cherry and blackberry. High acidity, tertiary emergent with liquorice dark chocolate and some kind of boozy tiramisu. Dry as an ossified camel. Long as the directors cut of gone with the wind. Crackin’ vineyard as always - delivering with class to the otherwise supermarket shelvery of cheapskate shite.

A worthy alternative to some of the more bold and expensive 100% tempranillo riojas. This one with 70% tempranillo and additions of garnacha, graciano and mazuelo (carignan). 26 months in oak, followed by concrete refining and further 18 months in the bottle. Violets and light cloves, a hint of spice and more pronounced sweetness, on a very fine layer of forest floor. Looking forward to retry after a few years in my cellar.

We enjoyed this in Madrid at a wonderful restaurant in old town. This bold, rich-bodied wine was a crowd favorite. It takes charge of your pallet in its first impression with a “inky” combination of dry tannins, dark fruits - prunes, cherry, and blackberry.
