In the end you of course go for a bottle of red at a Spanish winebar. I personally have recently appreciated some of the more floral light-bodied reds while my partner really wanted to get a heavy tannic red. So we compromised with this Mencia and got the best of both worlds: has the dry acidity of a lighter bodied style while also packing some tannins and lingering tertiary notes like leather. On the palette cherry and dark fruit with a little spice and violet. Lovely and best served slightly chilled. 4.2/5

This is a gorgeous Ribeira Sacra red, juicy, crunchy and spicy. Single site, cool climate, old vines on granite and quartz. 80% mencia blended with local varieties such as caíño and sousón. 10% whole bunches, vinification in old oak. Violet, cherry and cola, herbs, earth and leather. I love the sweet and savoury combination. Medium tannins, 13% ABV, medium-bodied and elegant with high acidity. Delicious. Try it lightly chilled in a burgundy glass!

This medium bodied and smooth Galician blend from Ribeira sacra really have to breath, it’s quite savoury and herbaceous first, then the black cherries and balsamic come through, along with some vanilla, liquorice and leather. It’s earthy, has great acidity, smoooooth tannins and very decent long spicy finish. Grapes are mencia, brancellao, merenzao, garnacha, mouraton, negreda and souson.

Finca Pombeiras 2022 is a top rated and cult wine from Ribeira Sacra. JS 99p, RP 97, Rene Langdahl 97p. Made on several grapes, mainly Mencia, but also Trousseau and Palomino grapes, etc. Natural fermaentation, whole cluster, aged 10-12 months in old 500 l oak casks. Only 800 bottles is made. Elegant wine with red currants, rhubarb, plums, minerals, tar and fine licorice. Very atypical Spanish, dry wine, opens up after some hours. I'm around 92p

Pombeiras is the coolest climate single site. 70-year-old vines planted on granite and quartz. Fermented in large 20-year-old 'Cuba' French oak with 10% stems, all whole bunches, for 60 days, then aged 10 months in 5-year-old 500l French barrels. Pombeiras means 'pigeons'. 800 bottles produced in 2021. 80% Mencia / 20% Local varieties (Caiño, Sousón, Merenzao, Brancellao). Spicy. Earthy. Dark fruit. Bit of florals. Nice texture coming through on the finish. Light and elegant.

A quick glass after a long day, bottle grabbed at the winery for a comparison tasting with the fantastic 2024 (from the barrel). Mencia dominated blend. Pale ruby. Med+ intensity, herbal, raspberry wet forest, later cherry shows up. Med+ acidity, med tannins, med alc, juicy, med body, med+ finish. Elegant & fun to drink!

The color is a medium dark ruby and it is clear. The nose is an interesting mix of balsamic, cacao, leather and ripe red cherries. The palate opens with a mix of red cherries and pomegranate with just a bit of tartness. In the background there is an interesting mix of balsamic, cacao and leather. The body is medium bold and it is dry with high tannins and medium high acid. Alcohol is 14%.

Wonderful and no cheap red wine from Sober, Rib. Sacra. Mencía with a myriad of other varieties—Caíño, Sousón, Brancellao, Merenzao, Negreda, Garnacha, Mouratón... The full clusters fermented with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels for one year. This is explosive with a baroque, exotic and decadent nose redolent of flowers, soy sauce, violet pastille, spices and herbs. Palate fine tannins, meat and terciary nuances. It's a little spirit 14.2°, 97+ Parker. 👍🍷😜👏🍷
