Vallformosa Cultivare Xarel-lo 2021

A dry white wine from D.O. Penedès, crafted by Vallformosa winery from the indigenous Xarel·lo grape. It features aromas of ripe peach and citrus, balanced by a broad texture and fresh acidity on the palate.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Xarel·lo
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Penedès
  • Winery: Vallformosa
  • Soil / Altitude: Altitude of 286 meters
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 6 months in oak and concrete egg

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from a historic vineyard planted in 1969 in Vilafranca del Penedès, at the foot of the Sant Jaume mountain range. These old, bush-trained vines grown at an altitude of 286 meters yield concentrated fruit with distinctive character.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

The winemaking process combines three different methods to achieve complexity: one part ferments in stainless steel, another in egg-shaped concrete tanks, and the remainder ages for six months in new French oak barrels.

Why buy it

This dry white wine is an excellent choice for those seeking both complexity and freshness. Its solid structure suggests a great aging potential, making it a worthy addition to any collection. To experience the finest expression of this traditional grape, you can buy Vallformosa Cultivare Xarel-lo 2021 online directly from our shop.

🔠 Saturday - 🆇 This beauty is a dry still wine, 💯% 🆇arel-lo 🍇. Typically used in Cava blends, the mono varietal 🆇arel-lo is not so common. This spends 3 months in lightly toasted French barrels. Strong yellow colour. Butter, cream, yellow stonefruit on the nose with clear notions of oak and smoke. Dry, med-full body, medium acidity. Flavours of white peach, banana, toasted oak, cream, spices and minerals. Elegant with med-long finish. 🏍😎 Bottle #1887 of 7010

Base of oxidation with ripe fresh tart white fruit. Despite relatively low alcohol at 12.5 abv; it still has a great viscous mouthfeel. Perfect for lighter dinner or heavier lunch white; good on its own but would pair brilliantly with a range of slightly richer food (maybe a curried chicken).

Continuing the majestic tour of new grapes - this time xarel-lo, usually in Cava. A buttery mouthfeel with an oaky, red apples and pear long finish. Very enjoyable

Don’t think I’ve ever had a Xarel-Lo before – the grape is most well known as a component of Cava. This is made from 50 year old vines and aged in both concrete and oak.   Love that nose – a mixture of peach skin, crushed rocks, melon and light tropics.   The palate is lean and brisk up front; bright acidity and zingy citrus. But there’s a lovely weighty, viscous mid taste. Peach blended in with tangy tropics. Minerality throughout.   Really refreshing and interesting wine.

4.1 A grape I've mostly tried in Cava, but when done right in a still wine, it can be really fantastic. Ripe red apples & pears, juicy buttery apricots, some lee ageing with pastry notes and just a glimpse of oxidative goodness. From 50 year old vines and aged in three parts (inox, cement vats and new French oak). For me, a magnificent surprise, totally recommended!

Nose of green apple that tastes of baked green apple on the palate. Hint of oak and butter, citrus scents. Acidic, dry, very fresh flavor. Complex flavors on the palate. A light greenish yellow color.

Xarel-lo is mostly used to produce sparkling Cava. This stand alone fresh white lacks expected nose structure, yet finish is surprisingly long and mineral. Acidic and dry. Try something unusual.

Do like a bit of Xarel-lo in my Cava, so was eager to try this authentic still white. Limited primary fruit flavours, some citrus, some apple, but great freshness and minerality. Some subtle wood-infused notes. Great kick of zippy acidity on the finish. Definitely see some analogies to a slightly wooded Chardonnay. Lovely!
