Oremus Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos 2016

Oremus Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos 2016 is a sweet white wine from the prestigious Tokaj wine region in Hungary, produced by Oremus Winery, which has been part of the renowned Spanish wine group Tempos Vega Sicilia since 1993. The history of this emblematic vineyard dates back several centuries, with the exceptional quality of its grapes already recognised in 1630. Under the ownership of Vega Sicilia, Oremus has further established its reputation as one of the leading producers of sweet Tokaji wines, combining centuries-old winemaking traditions with exceptional precision and expertise.

Made from the grape varieties Furmint, Hárslevelű, Zéta and Sárgamuskotály, this wine comes from vineyards situated at approximately 200 metres above sea level, where climatic conditions in certain vintages favour the development of Botrytis cinerea, commonly known as noble rot. This natural phenomenon causes an extraordinary concentration of sugars, aromas and acidity in the grapes, resulting in sweet wines of remarkable complexity and outstanding ageing potential.

The production of Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos 2016 follows a meticulous and traditional process. Grapes affected by noble rot are carefully selected by hand and added to the must according to the historic puttonyos system, which determines the quantity of Aszú berries used. Following careful maceration and gentle pressing, the wine undergoes slow fermentation in new Hungarian oak barrels.

The wine is then aged for two years in 136- and 200-litre oak barrels, followed by an additional period of bottle ageing. This process allows it to develop remarkable aromatic complexity and a silky texture while preserving the characteristic freshness of the great sweet wines of Tokaj.

An excellent accompaniment to foie gras, blue cheeses, fruit-based desserts, apricot tarts and delicate pastries, this wine can also be enjoyed on its own as an after-dinner treat. The recommended serving temperature is approximately 8°C. Thanks to its concentration and harmonious balance between sweetness and acidity, it offers exceptional ageing potential and can continue to evolve for decades under optimal storage conditions.

Oremus Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos 2016 is an excellent choice for those looking to buy wine online and discover one of Hungary's finest sweet wines, celebrated for its extraordinary balance of sweetness and acidity, aromatic complexity and elegance.

Tokaji has a special place in my taste, this one did not dissappoint. The only shame is the bottle size... should be bigger to enjoy more of it :)

Mainly Furmint, blended with Hárslevelű, Zéta, and Sárgamuskotály (Muscat). Slow fermentation in new Hungarian oak barrels (up to 4 weeks), followed by 2 years in small barrels (136–200 L) and 1 year in bottle. Prominent honey, dried apricot, tropical fruits (mango, passion fruit), citrus, pear, peach, acacia, and subtle cinnamon/sweet spice. Silky and unctuous sweetness, with lively acidity that refreshes. Full-bodied, glyceric, with a long, persistent finish echoing honey, apricot, and citrus.

I’m a fan of dessert wines, and this one was a goodie. Not as sweet as the nose promised, but the tasting notes shine through - honey, apricot, orange marmalade and just a hint of marzipan on the back palette. Lovely.

A traditional Tokaji blend dominated by Furmint and Hárslevelű, made using the puttonyos method of layering botrytized berries into base wine, followed by barrel aging in underground cellars. This wine bursts with dried apricot, fig, orange peel, and spice. Its sweetness is enveloping, but the Tokaji hallmark of high acidity keeps everything alive and bright. Deeply expressive and layered, this is a shining example of Hungary’s most treasured wine style.

Another great complex wine from this producer - just as good as the 2017 vintage. Also good QPR. Floral honeysuckle, apricot, peach, marmalade, pineapple, ginger spice. Well balanced with high acidity and a long finish. Still got plenty of life left in it
