Niepoort Colheita Port 2012

The vineyard

The 2012 growing season in the Porto region was marked by low rainfall and a cold winter. These conditions ensured uniform vine growth, while a cooler ripening period helped maintain a balanced acidity in the grapes.

Following a meticulous manual selection, the grapes were processed in traditional granite treading tanks before fortification. The wine was then aged in seasoned old oak casks, allowing it to develop its distinctive complexity.

Clear medium tawny with a large core and a small light brown edge. Clean medium aroma and controlled oxidation. No barrel. Aroma of dark fruit, raisin, fig and sweet spices. Sweet with medium acidity, low tannins, medium+ body and complexity. In mouth, dried fruit, plum, cherry and sweet spices. Medium+ length. Very good with good length and concentration.

Awesome port! On the menu it said 2003, but receipt said 2009. Who knows! Notes of molasses, caramel, vanilla, raisin, and toffee. Really smooth and delicious!

Tasting Group Tuesday - Port, 5 of 5. My first Colheita Port. Nice balance and structure. Not as complex. 20% alcohol. Medium ruby color. Medium+ intensity developed aromas of walnut, raisin, baking spices, toffee. Medium dry with full body and medium+ acidity. Medium+ intensity flavors of walnut, raisin, toffee, baking spices, dried cherry. Long length finish.

Last wine with a friend visiting us from Sydney, where we met years ago 🇦🇺🙃🥳 Port for a change with cheese instead of dessert 👍 Intense, spicy nose of cherry compote, prune, blackberry, liquorice, tobacco, cinnamon, black pepper, chocolate, raisin and nuts. Spirity but adding to the heady profile rather than disturbing. Sweet, rich and full, supported by ripe and smooth tannins. Excellent balance between good acidity and sweetness. Albeit the fruit character is most pronounced. Great concentration, acidity and intensity. Long finish. A delicious Colheita 2009 vintage. Port tasting 😁 This Colheita from 2012 is the 4th port of the evening 🙂 Comes with a colour of deep amber. Transparent. Aroma of caramel, toffee, prune and a touch of orange and tobacco. Quite bold, sweet on palate but still nicely balanced with its medium acidity. A little dryness and a long finish.
