The aroma comes off as stern, yet it has some funky, lacquered undertones, mingling with honeysuckle, chokeberry, lingonberry, licorice, meat, and leather. It swiftly devolves into a pissed old rags infested with bedbugs. The taste bears no resemblance to Rioja at all: it's sharp, like a blend of red berry pomace, with rough tannins that feel as if they were haphazardly pieced together with duct tape. A regrettable experiment.

This is a very bright and nicely made Rioja from Tentanubolo. I loved the freshness of it, but have to admit I think it could do with more ageing. The attack was too pronounced for me and I suspect it will soften out with time becoming rich, juicy, with lots of red cherry, vanilla and licorice flavours. Tried at Vinateros 24.

Decanted to wake it up, this was a joy to drink and sat well on the table with our meaty dishes. I rarely drink Rioja and now two in a week🤷🏻‍♂️. This wine is now ready for drinking but keeping for a bit longer will still reward. oak cherry blackberry earthy

Lunch at Lin’eau. Things are getting very serious in this place as the somm poured out this one by the glass, especially for us, what a treat! Paired with chicken & stuff, a treat as well! Smooth & sensual power madness with sandal wood, caramel, dried herbs, balsamic whiffs with ripe black cherries & brambles, a whiff of fresh polished leather, blond tobacco & flowery note. Boldness was expected on the palate, but this is vivid with marvelous red cherry & raspberry acids with morello hints nicely covered by ⤵️⤵️⤵️

Final wine from Rioja tasting dinner last weekend. From Roberto Oliván’s small family farm at 620 m. at the E end of the Santa Cantabrian Mountains ⛰ “Tentenublo” is the term for bell 🔔 ringing to ward off hail. His “Escondite del Ardacho” line,named after a local lizard 🦎are all from small single old-vine vineyards. “Veriquette” is 80/10 Tempranillo and 🌀arnacha with 10% white 🍇 Malvasia and Viura for brightness and lift. 50-100 yo vines, aged in used 500 L barrels for 9 mos, about the terroir not the ➡️

Opened this and poured it in a beam of sunlight. Gorgeous color - deep, mostly opaque ruby tinged with vibrant pink. Nose is oak, cherries, cedar, cinnamon and baking spice, with a little bit of yeasty or malt to it. Maybe a hint of salt and pepper. Palate: full body, tannins between smooth and gritty. All dark fruit, cherry, tobacco. Long finish. Highly drinkable on its own after a bit of air, but paired very well with a variety of foods.

Complex and heady wine of intense focus and precision. Powerfully textured with a pronounced saline minerality lingering on the lips as initially over- arching flavors of tangy blood orange, crushed black pepper, rose petals, dark olive tapenade give way to licorice root, roasted espresso and firm black cherry fruit tones. This is a small production bottling and named for a native lizard species. This is a blend of 90% Tempranillo, 9% Garnacha and 1 percent of Viura , a white grape varietal!

Interesting Tempranillo garnacha blend from L&S. Rich in flavour and dark fruit but this should have been left to age to get the most out of it - still very youthful. 👁 deep clear ruby 👃🏻 strong oak notes and intense dark fruit black cherry and blueberry. 👅a touch of spice/ pepper from the garnacha but not overpowering. The oak and Tempranillo shine through. Likely to be good QPR if you stuck it in the cellar for a few years but to drink now you can get far better VfM elsewhere

2016 Escondite del Ardacho Single Vineyard 'Veriquete’ - beautiful hints of blackberry, raspberry, oak and earthy mineral. A really well structured wine which balances acidity, tannins and boldness to create an almost perfect lingering finish. Very very good. My favourite Rioja I’ve had in a long time. 🍷🤙
