Ribera del Duero is especially good when aged, Alion by Vega Sicilia is the perfect confirmation of this! Ruby black in color, soft aroma with notes of ripe cherries, cedar heartwood, violets, vanilla and leather. Mild on the taste, medium body, velvety tannins, medium acidity. Concentrated black berries, blueberry pie, smoked steak, blackberry jam, plum and milk chocolate, burnt oak. Round and slightly bitter aftertaste with notes of black dried plum and mulberry.

Happy Tempranillo Tuesday! Did a mini-vertical 2011/2012 during a dinner with friends at home last Friday. Alion is such a nice wine from Vega Sicilia! 100% Tempranillo. Beautiful nose and taste of blackberry, plum, vanilla, tobacco, leather and dark chocolate. No earthy notes. Medium-full bodied, strong tannins that integrated more during dinner, dry and medium+ acidity. Long spicy finish. Fantastic wine! But it was way younger than expected. I should have decanted it more or even maybe kept it in the cellar! 🤣

A tremendous Zoom today with new faces and some long lost ones as well. 29 folks representing 7 countries, in comments. Theme today was "Splendid Spanish". My choice - from the Vega Sicilia family, they established the Alion estate in 1991 in the western Ribera del Duero. This 2012 is 100% Tempranillo, with grapes half from the Alion estate and half from Vega Sicilia. This was tasty despite my dusty hangover. 😉 Notes of black and red berries, animal hide, coffee, licorice and tobacco. Yum! 👍 🍷

Sour cherry raspberry blackberry unripe plum creosote truffle green olive on the nose and palate. Acids and tannins still prominent around dark core 10 yrs in. Excellent pairing w Cuban food tonight. Wish I had another couple of bottles to see how this juice evolves.

After 10 yeas still needs a long decanting 4 hours + decanter and violla the ginny is out of the bottle.. perfect plum cured meat balsamic smoky character super high acidity refresing this oldy. Tannins are still dominant giving full body. Just entering drinking window and will continue to deveolpe for 5-10 years .

Wine gods smiling on me in Bilbao as chose this for work dinner, priced incredibly competitively at top venue. Alion (backed by the same family behind Vega Sicilia) always a fave of mine. 1Y in oak and 2Y in bottle pre-release. 100% Tempranillo. The 12 vintage is still young and it benefited from a decant and time to show fully. Blueberry moved to cranberry to raspberry. Cinnamon toast and a hint of menthol in background. Firm tannins. Med+ acidity. Long length. Great pair esp with lamb main.

A classic Ribera and such a rewarding experience: Complex nose of black fruit (blackberry) and some cherry - mostly with clear tobacco and chocolate. The palate follows with same (Chocolate!) + complex array of spices such as pepper, licorice, and more. Palate is dominated by chocolate, oak, vanilla, coffee. A great wine opened at its peak!

Theme: oaked vs unoaked (same grape) This was my contribution. The wine sees 💯 new French barríque for 12 to 24 months. Aerated for 2 hours. Delicious, bold and beautiful. Ripe dark fruits, grippy tannins, cedar, smoke and LOTS OF SPICE, especially CLOVES.

Great ribera! Had it with St Agur blue cheese and green Sicillian olives. It has a roundness to it that has emerged with age. Some cigar box, cherry, blueberries and earthy notes. Will save the other bottle for a few more years and see how it developes.

Deep Purple red, with a strong rim. Powerful bouquet of cherry, blackberry and liquorice. Some star anise, and cedar, but also with a light note of violet. Grippy in the mouth. But not overpowering. Delicious and a long moreish finish. Great wine.
