Matsu La Jefa 2022

A dry white wine from the D.O. Toro appellation, crafted by the Matsu winery from centenarian vines. It features aromas of apple compote and soft vanilla, leading to a silky palate and a creamy finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Malvasía and other indigenous varieties
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Toro
  • Winery: Matsu
  • Soil / Altitude: Sandy and granitic with stones, 50 to 150-year-old vines
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 14 months in 600-liter French oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from old vines aged between 50 and 150 years, cultivated in the Toro region. These vineyards grow in sandy, granitic soils, which impart a unique character to the scarce white grape varieties planted among the red vines.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest, the must undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in 600-liter French oak barrels. The wine is then aged for 14 months on its fine lees to develop texture and complexity.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a structured white wine with excellent aging potential for your cellar, this dry white wine offers a unique perspective on a region known for its reds. Its balance ensures it will develop beautifully in the bottle over the coming years. You can buy Matsu La Jefa 2022 online directly from our shop.

Bright straw-yellow in the glass. The nose is subtle and soft with vibe of marzipan and toast. The palette is elegant and complex. Starting off with green apple and soft citrus with a hint of honey. It evolves to vanilla, almond and it has saline as well. Full bodied white, with a good dose of acidity. Long finish that keeps lingering. Wine makes good on its promise, price is correct.

I’ve tried a few Matsu wines. The labels are always very distinctive This is textured and fresh. Predominantly Malvasia from 50-150 year old vines, aged in new, lightly toasted 600l French oak barrels Green apple, ripe nectarine, lemon cream, pineapple High quality vanilla, caramel Toasted oatmeal Star anise and preserved ginger Long, fresh finish

A nice accessible white Toro. Mouthwateringly juicy and fruity with decent weight and complexity. Peach, apricot, pineapple, mango, orange, vanilla. Quite a soapy texture. Spanish New Wave Textual Whites wine 3 (thanks to @[1|1260249|Robbie Priddle]).

@[1|47623479|Blind Faith] Spanish New Wave Textural Spanish Whites #3 2022 Matsu La Jefa! All the families in DO Toro own a vineyard that has been passed down for generations. This emotional connection that unites them makes it impossible to let go of it. Therefore the vineyard continues to be like another member of the family, which they take care of with dedication and passion 365 days a year. Matsu, which in Japanese means to wait, pays tribute to all the wine growers who, for centuries, have More below ⬇️ ⬇️

The third of @[1|1260249|Robbie Priddle]’s Spanish new wave textural whites, this is mainly malvasia from 50-150yo vines scattered among red grape, dry-farmed vineyards in the Toro region. Slight reductive struck match on the nose. Barrel ageing (all or mostly French oak) adds toasty notes, vanilla, texture and spice. Lemon cream, fresh green apple, touches of nectarine and anise. 12.5% ABV, medium(+) acidity. A good option as an alternative to white Burgundy of a similar price.

Typical oaked Spanish white. Toro Malvasia. Oak, vanilla, pear, stone fruit, citrus, some grapefruit and phenolic bitterness. Complex and a bit creamy mouthfeel. Medium body, medium acidity, dry

This is a lovely Spanish toro white I’m enjoying at my bbq. It has lots of green tree and citrus flavours of apple, peach and lime with hints of honey, butter and coconut!
