Castell d’Encus Thalarn 2019

This dry red Syrah comes from the D.O. Costers del Segre, crafted by the Castell d'Encus winery. It offers aromas of plum, chocolate, and tobacco, leading to a vibrant palate with polished tannins and a persistent finish featuring notes of licorice.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: 100% Syrah
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Costers del Segre
  • Winery: Castell d'Encus
  • Soil / Altitude: High altitude, 800-1230 m
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: Aged in French oak barrels, cellaring potential

The vineyard

The vineyards are cultivated in a high-altitude mountain environment, ranging from 800 to 1,230 meters above sea level in the Pyrenees. This cool climate allows for slow ripening, preserving the natural acidity and freshness of the grapes.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest, fermentation takes place in 12th-century stone vats, wooden tuns, and stainless steel tanks. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and ageing in French oak barrels.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a cellar-worthy wine with a distinct mountain character, this red will bring great distinction to your collection. Its structure ensures excellent evolution over the coming years, so you can buy Castell d’Encus Thalarn 2019 online directly from our shop.

Spicy and edgy. Loads of cassis. Wouldn’t want to drink this younger. Needs a long decant to come into its own. A woody note that I can’t put my finger on. It’s not oakish, more like pine planks. (James Suckling says “bark”). Mid weight. As local to Baqueira ⛷️ as it gets (50 km south as the crow flies) Wasn’t expecting to encounter anything with such a crazy backstory when I popped in to review. Partly open air fermentation in vats carved into mountain side granite by 12th century monks! ⛪️ Single vineyard.

Well balanced. Berries. Open air fermented in hand carved granite tanks. Surprisingly no funkiness considering the open air. Maybe because of the fresher mountain air.

Second Spanish Syrah in the space of two weeks, this one high altitude in the Pyrenees. Seductive, herbal and earthy nise with black currant, black cherry and cedar followed by a smooth and slightly sweaty palate with beautiful acidity, constructive tannins, black pepper, black cherry, black currant, well integrated oak, some licorice and long finish.

Complex, lovely aroma! the terroir where the grapes are grown is clean, ecological area! 13 %; the wine ages for 12 months in used oak barrels; the oak is very elegant, more like tobacco; light pepper; the critics give 92 points to this wine and I would say it’s just amazing! This wine would go perfectly with red meats!

As the back label alludes to, this is not about the fruit (though there’s enough bramble, cassis & black cherry to keep me happy) but more about spice (I can only pick out black & white pepper but there’s lots going on). I also get lots of freshness on the nose which then leads to a deep smoky note as you transition from inhaling to imbibing, just before you hit all the taste buds. Texturally, it’s a triumph with mouth-coating velvety, silky tannins which still bring great structure. ⤵️

Deep dark purple in the glass. Nose of cherries and berries, some herbs and pepper and a hint of cigar box. Taste is mouth filling with darker fruit, vanilla and a smooth wood in a very long and silky soft finish.

Wouldn't know it's syrah if tasted blind. Earthy, spices, the fruits comes later. Texture is quite smooth. Interesting wine.

Last night we had an impromptu meet up with Nicole, Dani and families. A great evening of nice sparklings, nice red wines and a TON of food. We polished off five bottles over the evening. 4th bottle of the evening was a Syrah from an iconic 🇪🇸 producer that Dani was able to pick up in Canada. Inky maroon. An elegant flavours profile with blackberry, black currant, smoke, and spice on the finish. This wine went down so easily that we were looking for more but the bottle just disappeared. 4.1 ✨

A very different Syrah, from Spain, from the Pyrenees, from 1,000 m altitude. Fermented partly in Roman times stone vats. Bouquet full of leather and earthy notes with flower tones, violets. Palate is silky, elegant and jammy but not sweet, the wine is not heavy at all and can barely feel the alcohol. There isn’t the typical spice kick from Syrah, it’s a very feminine wine.

My first Spanish Syrah and one from the altitudes if the Pyrenees mountains. Intensely fruity, red and black cherry, bramble, red flowers. It was partly fermented in antique cement vats, but oak is evident with vanilla, bitter chocolate. Spices at the finish. The wine is lifted and medium bodied, structured, well balanced.
