Casa Castillo Las Gravas 2022

Casa Castillo Las Gravas 2022 is a prestigious red wine produced by Bodega Casa Castillo, one of the leading wineries in the D.O.P. Jumilla, in the Region of Murcia, Spain. Made primarily from Monastrell with a small proportion of Garnacha, this wine reflects the distinctive Mediterranean terroir and the philosophy of a winery renowned for its respect for the vineyard and its ability to produce wines of remarkable depth, authenticity and character.

The grapes come from vineyards where Monastrell, Jumilla's emblematic grape variety, plays a leading role. For this vintage, the blend consists mainly of Monastrell from old vines (approximately 60%), together with 30% from vines planted in 2006 and around 7% Garnacha. The combination of vines of different ages contributes concentration, complexity and the distinctive structure associated with great Mediterranean red wines.

The 2022 vintage was marked by particularly challenging weather conditions. It was an exceptionally hot and dry year, with very little rainfall and a severe hailstorm on May 1 that caused significant damage to the vineyards and reduced the harvest by approximately 60%. Earlier-ripening varieties, particularly Syrah and Garnacha, were the most affected, while Monastrell demonstrated greater resistance to these extreme conditions.

These circumstances resulted in a harvest with higher levels of ripeness, producing wines of remarkable concentration and a more austere, structured expression. The winemaking process for Las Gravas 2022 was adapted to the characteristics of the vintage, extending its ageing to approximately 18 months in large oak foudres to encourage balanced development and better integration of its components.

Production was particularly limited, with only 20,000 bottles, approximately half the quantity produced in the previous vintage. Bottled in June 2024, this wine stands out for its depth, firmness and excellent ageing potential, displaying a serious character that will develop beautifully over time.

An excellent accompaniment to red meats, roast lamb, game dishes, traditional stews, grilled meats and aged cheeses. Its structure and depth also make it an ideal match for richly flavoured Mediterranean dishes. Best served between 16 and 18°C. Given its youth and structure, it is advisable to allow the wine to breathe before serving or give it additional time to mature in the bottle to enjoy a more open and harmonious expression.

Casa Castillo Las Gravas 2022 is an excellent choice for those looking to buy wine online and discover one of Jumilla's finest red wines, made from Monastrell and Garnacha, with a distinctive mineral character, limited production and remarkable ageing potential.

92 points. 2022 vintage drank in 2026. This bottle started out very tight and muted. Definitely needs decanting as it’s obviously slightly young. Lots of red fruit, cherry, oak and d m leather. Some spice and pepper / cinnamon. Medium bodied with softish tannins and medium acidity. Give this bottle an hour to decant and it becomes more structured with minerality. Give this bottle 3/4 years more and it would be an amazing bottle in its prime. An interesting grape variety of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache.

14.5 % ABV. Clear saturated ruby. Striking expressive, inviting nose. Very dry palate with red fruits, candied red fruits, perfectly balanced acidity, silky tannins, lingering asian spices. Everything is exquisitely balanced. #Deep dive in to Spain#

Casa Castillo’s Las Gravas is a single north-facing parcel of Monastrell bush vines in Jumilla, dry-farmed without irrigation since 1985 by the Vicente family. The 2021 is ~90% Monastrell and 10% Garnacha; fermented with indigenous yeasts with 30% whole clusters, then aged 100% in large 5,000L oak foudre. Dark plum, garrigue, and balsamic on the nose; powerful but precise on the palate with velvety tannins and a long, chalky-stony finish. Drinks superbly, with a distinct Southern Rhône character.

Bold and a just off dry fruit softness. Cherries and black ( or maybe red?) currents. Needs some air to truly come alive

Served slightly chilled at Colmado Wilmot in Barcelona. Juicy and deeply versatile, was just the Garnacha we needed for our meal. Bursting with red fruit married with a lingering finish that showed some vanilla and maybe a hint of cardamom? Delightful wine.

Aromas of stone, pepper, potting soil, charcoal, lavender …rich and complex layers of big blueberry, raspberry jam, tobacco, smoke, clove, campfire, notes of dark chocolate, intense cracked pepper, mint chocolate spice on back end that carries into a long dry finish with round tannins…chewy mouth feel, medium+ bodied, dark crimson color fades to a translucent light rim… delicious Jumilla…probably the best I’ve had…

A Monastrell-dominant blend (with Garnacha/Syrah) from 35+ year-old vines on gravelly alluvial soils, aged 16 months in French oak (50% new). The nose explodes with blackberry, blueberry, and graphite, layered with violets, smoked meat, and crushed stone. The full-bodied palate delivers dense fruit, polished tannins, and a mineral-driven finish of extraordinary length. 14.5% ABV with 15+ years aging potential. A terroir-icon from Jumilla’s finest plot.

The Las Gravas 2021 from Bodegas Casa Castillo in Jumilla is a blend of 90% Monastrell and 10% Garnacha that matures for 14 months in large wooden barrels. Flavours of dark fruits (blackberries, black cherries), subtle smoky notes and chocolate. A fantastic wine.

2021 vintage. Opaque ruby color, dark fruit on the nose. A blend of 92% Monastrell and 8% Garnacha, this is a dark and somewhat brooding wine, with flavors of blackberry, black olive, gravel, oak, charcoal, some earthiness, and a bit of green stems. Grippy tannins and medium plus acidity. Needs at least a half hour to open up, then it’s just the thing for some goat stew. 92 points. Follow up: This was much better after 24 hours - rounder and more integrated. 93 points.
