Oxer Bastegieta Marko Gure Arbasoak 2024

This dry white wine from D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina is a blend of local Hondarribi Zuri, Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia, and Izkiriota Txikia grapes crafted by Oxer Wines. It offers aromas of ripe apple and pear with floral notes, a creamy texture on the palate, and a long, mineral finish with subtle smoky undertones.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Hondarribi Zuri, Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia, Izkiriota Txikia
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina
  • Winery: Oxer Wines
  • Soil / Altitude: Clay over limestone and slate, near the coast
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: Barrel fermentation and aging on the lees

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from vineyards in Kortezubi, a village in Vizcaya close to the Cantabrian coast. The vines grow in clay soils over limestone and slate subsoils, which impart a distinctive saline and mineral character to the wine.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by aging on the lees with regular bâtonnage to enhance body, creaminess, and aromatic complexity.

Why buy it

There are wines that impress and wines that simply make you happy. Marko always does the latter. Ripe pear, apple, lemon curd, flint, saline minerals and just enough wildness to keep the wine nerds like myself entertained. Creamy, energetic, masterfully balanced, it manages the rare trick of being both distinctive and dangerously drinkable. Not Oxer’s biggest statement wine but one that feels deeply personal. One that quietly reminds you why he’s Oxer. Some wines try very hard, Marko doesn’t even seem bothered.

2024 Rather closed nose but some grilled lemons. Taste with minerals and citrus. Quite long. Interesting grapes. Never tried the the Hondarribi zuri varieties. Maybe needs more time.

nice body when not served to cold. light white table wine with acidity. nice to balance with warm-smoked salmon. it's a bit rough on its own. light peach, autolosys, pear on the nose. little tannins, lingering brioche after a hit of acidity. nice when paired correct.

Fresh as! Gure Arbasoak means “our ancestors” in Basque. Phrase on label comes from a Basque witch spell, “Baga, Higa, Biga. Ikimilikiliklik, Izan Ontsa!” (1,2,3. Abracadabra, be good!) 🪄 This is 45% Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia, 40% Hondarribi Zuri and 15% Izkiriota Txikia. The vineyards are located in the village of Kortezubi, a little old town in Bizkaia, famous for its prehistoric caves. 70% French oak, 30% stainless, indigenous yeast, 9mths on lees. Bottled unfiltered. Highly mineral, with stonefruits.

Tiptop winemaking here, its perfectly balance with all aspect; m+ body, ripeness, yeast contact, acidity all in harmony. Some moderate yellow fruits, floral, creamy and viscous texture. Enough freshness to enjoy this young which I was told this vintage was just bottled in August this year.

Pale golden colour. Smell of yellow apple, apricot, butter and pear. Taste of minerals, pear, yellow apple, apricot, tangerine and honey. A blend of Hondarribi Zuri 45%, Petit Courbu 45%, Petit Manseng 10%. 70% of the wine is fermented in 500 litre French oak barrels and foudres, and 30% in stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, using indigenous yeast, the wine is aged for 9 months in contact with its lees. Finally the wine is bottled unfiltered. Nicely balanced

High level - on the apricot, almond, hazelnut, marzipan, some floral. On the palate it is a well balanced, rather long and and subtle, oxydative a bit, some oak, lemon, some tropical fruit notes, pencil shavings, white pepper… pricewise it is also a very fair deal !
