Hacienda Lopez de Haro Gran Reserva Classica Blanco 2014

This dry white wine from D.O. Ca. Rioja is a classic creation by the Hacienda López de Haro winery. It features a bright golden color, aromas of chamomile, dried flowers, and citrus, balanced by a broad, glyceric palate and vibrant acidity.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Viura, Malvasía, Garnacha Blanca
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Ca. Rioja
  • Winery: Hacienda López de Haro
  • Soil / Altitude: Limestone and clay-iron, high altitude
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 3 years in oak barrels, high cellaring potential

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from old bush vines, averaging 65 years of age, located in the Sonsierra and Alto Najerilla subregions. These high-altitude vineyards sit on limestone and clay-iron soils, sheltered from cold winds by the Cantabria and Toloño mountain ranges.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

The Viura, Malvasía, and Garnacha Blanca grapes undergo co-fermentation using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for three years in European oak barrels to develop its structured profile.

Why buy it

For collectors of traditional Spanish whites, this aged wine offers remarkable structure and cellaring potential. Its complex character makes it a versatile companion for sophisticated gastronomy. If you wish to enrich your cellar with a classic Rioja, you can buy Hacienda Lopez de Haro Gran Reserva Classica Blanco 2014 online directly from our boutique.

Wimbledon, dinner The Wine Society Golden straw, pronounced vanilla, cedar, butter, ripe lemon, orange peel, dried mango and dried honey. Great oxidative notes with lemon peel, nutty and caramel. Super tension, a strong backbone of acidity and a lovely balance, oak slightly dominate the fruit leaving the mouthfeel less multi-dimensional - would love more fruit. Long, dry finish with citrus, (burnt) popcorn and a saline minerality layered over a savory, nutty core. Score is more for the style.

TWS and Decanter recommendation and they weren’t wrong! Luscious deep golden colour. Captivating aromas of lemon curd, marzipan, and toasted brioche. Salty flint like taste with some nice citrus and cream notes. Superb!

Spain was the winner! This is the best Spanish white I’ve had. Great fruity youthfulness still, just showing a little of nuttiness that defines great white Rioja’s, with a great lemon charged finish to go along.

Fabulous Rioja Alta Gran Reserva white wine. Blend of grapes, predominantly Viura. Very deep gold, bordering on amber in the glass. Oaky and complex, burnt apple, honey and vanilla notes, beautifully balanced. Justifies high rating.

Medium amber colour. The nose is very distinctive, showing a traditional oxidative style with heavy oak influence. There are pronounced notes of vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, hazelnut, and roasted almond. Not much fruit on the nose. Palate is the same though there might be a hint of yellow apple. Very interesting and complex wine that would work well with richer foods.

Not for the faint hearted but the colour belies its subtlety.

12 % ABV. Classical style white Rioja. Golden to amber. Bone dry, honey, beeswax, apricot, white peach, hint of bananas, candied almonds, slightly oxidized in style, hints of balsamic notes at the finish. #Deep dive in to Spain#

This is a golden-colored, harmonious, complex, and contemplative wine. Aromas and flavors are of more than medium intensity. Acidity: medium. Alcohol: medium to high. Tannins: light. Body: full. Texture: soft and delicate. Nose and palate: Primary aromas of vanilla ice cream, biscuits, with secondary notes of almond, dried apricot, butterscotch and hints of musk, honey, cardamom, and limestone. Finish: very long. Score: 95/100.

Clear with deep golden colour. Medium+ nose intensity with aromas of ripe peach, ripe apricot, quince, fig, cheese, smoke, butter, honey, honeycomb, almond and hazelnut. The nose is fully developed. Dry palate with medium acidity, medium alcohol and full body. Medium+ intensity flavor of ripe quince, ripe peach, fig, honey, almond and hazelnut. Long finish with aftertaste of fig and honey. Drink it now, no further ageing potential. Excellent QPR!

On the nose relatively delicate oak and tertiary aromas with yellow ripe fruits, touch of cigars and smoke. On the palate very good acidity, strength, fruits with good concentration and long finish. Good balance between primary and tertiary flavors.

Intense nose of caramelised banana, butterscotch and peach plus palate of grapefruit, pineapple and apple skins. With seared scallops (without butter), you can get metallic (tinny or bloody) vibe from the aftertaste. Probably as a result of oxidative ligands competing with the amino acids? Leaving the irons or zinc ions free on your tongue?
