Familia Torres Milmanda 2021

This dry white wine from D.O. Conca de Barberà is a single-varietal Chardonnay crafted by the Familia Torres winery. It offers aromas of candied citrus and dried pear, complemented by subtle notes of coconut and a concentrated, long-lasting finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Chardonnay
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Conca de Barberà
  • Winery: Bodegas Torres
  • Soil / Altitude: Deep clay-limestone rich in silt
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 4 months in wood, 12 months on lees

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from a 15-hectare vineyard planted in 1980 opposite the historic Milmanda castle. The deep clay-limestone soils provide excellent water retention, while the nearby Prades mountains introduce a continental influence to the Mediterranean climate.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Fermentation takes place in oak barrels and foudres without malolactic fermentation to preserve natural acidity. The wine then ages for four months in wood, followed by twelve months on fine lees in stainless steel tanks.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a white wine with great cellaring potential and structure, this is a highly recommended addition to your collection. Its balance of fresh fruit and well-integrated oak makes it a perfect companion for special occasions. You can buy Familia Torres Milmanda 2021 online directly from our shop.

#Primum Familiae Vini walk around tasting in Montreal. Familia Torres brought five wines for the tasting. After the Albariño, it was time to taste a Chardonnay. This performed fairly typically for the grape, with lemon, red apple, peach, butter and oak. Fairly round in the mouth, with M+ acidity.

Easily the best Spanish Chardonnay I had until now. Luckily because also the most expensive. The key is the judicious maturation. Just 4 months in oak and 12 months in inox. Oily and creamy nose with white peach, apricot, yellow apple, vanilla and some anise followed by an oily palate with pure, pronounced acidity, juicy peach, apricot, yellow lemon and very long, intense finish with some vanilla and green banana.

Primum Familiae Vini Second wine was this Chardonnay from a vineyard lying at the base of Castle Milmanda, fully dedicated to Chardonnay. A nose of peach, pear, lemon and oak. More balanced with medium acidity.

The first references to the Torres family as winegrowers date back to 1559, but it wasn’t until 1870 that the brothers Jaime and Miguel Torres Vendrell founded the winery in Vilafranca del Penedès, with its focus on exportation. After emigrating to Cuba in 1860, Jaime Torres Vendrell (1843–1904) made his fortune on the island thanks to maritime trade and other business initiatives, before returning to Catalonia to partner with Miguel (1832–1910), his winegrower brother. Together, they set up a winery More ⬇️ ⬇️

Still one of my favourite Chardonnays. It’s smooth fruity and with a good nose. Long on the palate although you’d expect that anyway. Frankly beautiful with anything and drinking on its own…

A profound and sophisticated Spanish Chardonnay from a historic estate. The nose is complex and layered, revealing aromas of ripe pear, white peach, toasted almonds, and a deep, smoky, flinty minerality. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, with a creamy, rounded mouthfeel balanced by a vibrant, linear acidity. Flavors of citrus, honey, and a touch of sweet spice lead to a long, persistent, and elegantly structured finish.
