Friday after work tasting at The Straits Wine Company. Tempranillo based Rioja with some white grapes blended in according to the staff. Medium ruby coloured with a nose of dark plums, rum raisins and dried prunes. A bit Amarone like. Medium bodied with some tart red cherries coming through on the palate. Medium plus acidity and medium finish. Not to my liking. Felt off-kilter to me.

Extremely lovely wild style Rioja with 40% viura, 60% old vine tempranillo (65+ years). Real earthy moment expressing gravel, minerals and soil. Fresh lively and exciting berry fruit moment flows through with intense black licorice, cherry and smoky finish. Atypical and really quite excellent Rioja!

This wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation. Tempranillo blended with white Viura, which represents between 30-40% of the final blend. Medium ruby colour. Not a typical rioja, silky texture with a vibrant citrus acidity, yet it is expressive.

Single vineyard (0.62 ha). Complatation of tempranillo and viura (40%). Lighter colored but with great concentration. Aromas of red and black fruit, vanilla and cinnamon. Meaty juicy fruit on the palate with floral and mineral hints. Good structure, clear tannins but pleasantly refreshing.
