Castell d'Encus Jhana 2019

A dry orange wine from D.O. Costers del Segre, crafted by the Castell d'Encus winery. It shows a coppery hue, aromas of quince, fennel, and thyme, followed by a fresh palate of reinette apple and a long finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Merlot, Petit Verdot
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Costers del Segre
  • Winery: Castell d'Encus
  • Soil / Altitude: Altitude of 800-950 meters
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 6 months in oak barrels

The vineyard

The vineyards are located at a high altitude, between 800 and 950 meters above sea level, surrounded by forests in the Pyrenean foothills. This mountain climate and thermal amplitude promote slow ripening and preserve the natural acidity of the grapes.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand in small ten-kilogram boxes. After a low-temperature maceration, fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by six months of ageing to add structure and complexity.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a unique addition to your cellar, this orange wine offers a distinctive perspective on Merlot and Petit Verdot. Its aromatic profile and body make it a highly versatile gastronomic option. You can buy Castell d'Encus Jhana 2019 online directly from our shop.

Unexpectedly found an older vintage of this top of the line, oak aged Rose. Merlot blend with a touch of PV, grown at 1000m altitude. Compared to a younger one tasted a year ago, this one definitely has not lost it’s freshness. As expected, dense, rich and oily with precise, intense, red berry driven acidity. Combining red fruit, dried blood orange and notable floral aromas on the entry transitioning into marzipan, rose petals, dried apricot and hints of autumn forest floor. Worked really well over braised rabbit.

Wow. One of the best rosé wines I have tried. The color is amazing, it’s intense and inspiring before even smelling it. Aromas of strawberry, sour cherries, cranberry, vanilla. High acidity, some tannins, red fruit flavors on palate. Excellent wine.

Amazing antidote to insipid pink - intensity, energy, acidity, tension. More than I would normally contemplate spending on a rosé, but have loved Cd'E's whites so figured this had to be worth the risk. 90/10 blend of hand-picked Merlot/Petit Verdot from high altitude (1000m+) vines. Fermented and aged 6 months in oak. Strawberry, bitter cherry, cranberry, vanilla on the nose. Vibrant, sharp summer red fruit palate. High acidity, even a bit of tannic grip. Food friendly. Could age, but gorgeous now.

Very nice, pale onion skin rosé. Little extraction and highly classy wine. Very delicate as it is at a very close distance to oxidation given its low intensity. Organoleptically interesting. The perfect companion to any pairing: Difficult to thing what type of food would not be suited to this wine. Aromas of very fresh red forest fruits. Aromatic herbs. Dry tree leaves. And perhaps dry flowers as well. In mouth, honey, less fresh than expected. Little acidity.

The French, very pricey rosé and not quite delivering for the price. It's very nice but I was expecting more.

Even if I don’t enjoy rose to full extend, I realise that this is a great wine made by Mr. Bobet packed with red fruit with a hint of minerals. No matter what wine Mr. Bobet produce and create, it is always top level.
