Olivier Rivière Ganko 2018

Un vino tinto seco de la D.O. Ca. Rioja elaborado por el viticultor Olivier Rivière a partir de Garnacha y Mazuelo. Presenta un perfil fresco con una marcada mineralidad, notas de frutas silvestres y un final largo y equilibrado.

Datos clave

  • Variedad: Garnacha, Mazuelo
  • D.O. / Región: D.O. Ca. Rioja
  • Bodega: Olivier Rivière
  • Suelo / Altitud: Arcilla roja arenosa, 600 m

Olivier was born and raised in Cognac. Worked at various famous estates including Leroy practicing biodynamics. Originally lured to Spain in 2004 by Telmo to convert his vineyards to biodynamics and never left. In 06 started his own project. Ganko from Rioja Alta, 60-90 years old Garnacha and Mazuelo in sandy and red clay. Olivier considers this wine to be his 1er cru. Fermented with stems. Blind. Rustic, stemmy wild. Not a lot of fruit. Slightly clumsy for my taste

Second encounter, same excellent vintage — consistent experience. The combination of 60–90-year-old Garnacha and Mazuelo on iron-rich Cárdenas soils at 600m, biodynamic farming, whole-cluster nuance, and an unusually extended foudre ageing results in a wine of mineral intensity, Burgundian discipline, and real ageing potential. Rivière is a true talent in Rioja—certainly one to watch closely.

A Rioja for Burgundy lovers. Not heavy, not overly oaked, very precise and elegant. Red cherry, wild strawberry, dried herbs we couldn’t quite identify.

Blimey, this was a nice surprise. From the off the wine already was velvety smooth and had a lovely sweet nose of raspberry and mixed hedgerow fruit. Full bodied flavours with a hint of liquorice which lingers on the palate and absolutely delicious it is too! Not the cheapest but beats many in the same price bracket hands down tbh. Recommended.

Not doing it for me - and lower score than last time out. Nicely aromatic and leggy. Nice colour, if remaining a little too purple, despite now being nearly 8 years old. But totally lacking in taste! No mouthfeel. Missing texture. Will finish the remaining bottles, but won’t be looking to re-purchase and wouldn’t recommend anybody else does. There are far better garnachas from Spain out there and no Rioja typicity - so why buy it?

Garnacha and Mazuelo. The nose reveals a bouquet of red berries, black cherries, and subtle floral notes. On the palate lots of red fruits, complemented by a subtle spiciness. The judicious use of oak introduces nuanced layers of vanilla and a hint of toasty complexity without overshadowing the fruit. The texture is refined, with smooth tannins that provide a polished structure, and a refreshing acidity that maintains vibrancy. Modern style Rioja and a safe bet for a pre-Xmas gathering with valued colleagues.
