Suertes Del Marqués El Chibirique 2019

A dry red wine made from the Listán Negro grape variety in the D.O. Valle de La Orotava by the Suertes del Marqués winery. It features an aromatic profile with balsamic notes, spicy hints of clove, and a structured palate with firm tannins.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Listán Negro
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Valle de La Orotava
  • Winery: Suertes del Marqués
  • Soil / Altitude: Clay over volcanic rock, 400-430 m
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 11 months in oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes originate from a small 0.35-hectare plot situated at an altitude of 400 to 430 meters. The vines, aged between 60 and 90 years, grow on clay soils over volcanic rock and are trained using the traditional cordón trenzado system.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks using whole clusters and indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 11 months in used 500-liter oak barrels.

Grenat red colour with limited concentration. A smokey nose with spices and dark and ted berries. A lot of similarities with Spätburgunder But it is a Spanish wine from Tenerife with the rate Listan grape. Fruity, full bodied and elegant. Tannins are quite powerful but also elegant and well integrated. Long finish. For me excellent.

60-70 years old listán negro at 400+ altitudes. Trained using the braided cordon system on volcanic soils. Tasting. Juicy slightly rustic. No detailed notes

Suertes del Marqués horizontal degustation. Much harsher than all other wines of the evening (perhaps because it passed too much time in oak). 100% Listsn Negro from 60-90 yo vines planted at 400-430 m asl in 0.35 ha El Chibirique vineyard in La Orotava (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands) fermented with whole grapes in open top plastic (!) cubes and matured in oak barrels for 36 months. Dark cardinal red colour with pale rims. In the nose horse harness, charcoal, paint & varnish and peony 🔽🔽🔽

So much better than the way it’s rated here. Bright red cherry cranberry with lots of minerals Restrained use of oak that exhibits the terroir. Bright fresh acidity with mild velvety tannins. Medium body and Medium length. As this is not a very well know appellations, I would associate this with nerello mascalese from Etna Sicily.

During a blind tasting, my first guess was Edna in Italy, as the smoky aromas reminded me of the flavors from volcanic soil. However, it actually hails from the volcanic region of Valle de la Orotava in Spain. This wine is incredibly aromatic, featuring notes of white pepper, red berries, and smoke, complemented by hints of earthiness, rose petals, and leather. It is well-balanced and fresh, with a medium finish.

This wine need time to be decanted or you can’t find a lot in it. After its very dense mix of berry jam, rubber, smoked plums, gouache, umami. Medium acidity, long aftertaste.

2025-04-29 Wine #5 on Canary Islands Vol. 2 At first, the sulphur is a bit startling - but give it time and it starts to reveal much prettier layers: wild strawberries, gouache, and those charming cornichon notes you sometimes get in old Burgundy. The balance is already impressive - great acidity, firm tannins - but it's not quite fully there yet. Still, the wine is beautiful, charged, and long. Very Burgundian in spirit, with excellent concentration and a promising future.

Very old vines, wild yeasts, whole bunches fermentation ... it is not a wine for everyone's understanding or taste. It is a mix of red and black fruits with a bit of vanilla and smoke and is both rustic and elegant. 9,1 PM

El Chibiruque is a single vineyard, 0.4 ha. 60-80 y.o. ungrafted Listan Negro 🍇 fermented with natural yeasts and unfiltered. 11 months aging in 500 litre neutral French oak. Light to medium garnet red. Beautifully sulphuric nose blending red berries with gunpowder. Body is a bit rested but in a good shape with gripping tannins and full fruitiness - all covered by pleasant (and thickening) layer of tertiary wood, inky a bit stinky meat and neutral vanilla stick.

Interesting, putting it mildly. And surprisingly pleasant. My wife and I love playing the „Which celebrity is this wine?“ game and my guess today is Keith Richards. Wrinkled, sun-burnt, old - but still with some eye liner and a cool hat on. But I digress… Light garnet in the glass with a lot of brown. Crazy aroma of burnt matches, sour rosehip drink, iodine. I expected it to be barely drinkable with a nose like this but… The acidity is okay, the tannins are rough but pleasant… it’s delicious actually.

Smoke, flint and sulphur in the nose. Hardly any fruit. On the palate the smoke is present but not overwhelmingly so. There is mint, pomegranate, a bit of cranberry and a gripping acidity in the mouth. Quite an enjoyable wine. When I drink it, it takes me back to long hikes on Tenerife and it’s breathing landscape and it puts a smile on my face. What more can you ask from a good wine?

Medium red color. Nose: minerals, rock, smoke, ash, earthy, cured meat, red currant, wild strawberries, spices, chilli. Taste: minerals, ash, smoke, spices, wild strawberries, smoke plum, high acidity, medium - tannins, medium + finish. Actually long finish. One of the most minerals wines I have ever tried. Not a mainstream wine, really special stuff.

Good expression of Canary Listan Negro, volcanic sulfiric nose, subtle red fruit and salinity, very mineral. Med- body and med acidity. Less pricy Esquilon from the same winery is better, imho.

On opening, very astringent and massively structured. After two days in the fridge, the fruit sings: very Pinotesque, with earth and tar but nice red fruit underneath. The palate is fresh, with sweet cherry fruit, lovely length, chunky but ripe tannins and nice, linear length. 100% Listan Negro, a red variety from Tenerife, from the Chibirique single vineyard and over 80 years old ungrafted vines, 400m altitude. 13% ABV. Nice, wish I’d have given it more time. 91/100.

This is a really unique wine. Intensely earthy with musk and mushroom, and an irresistible smokiness from the volcanic terroir

Interesting. Smoke, cured meat, cranberry, leather. Reductive, volcanic wine. Possibly a touch overdoing the astringency but I think good enough for an fairly unique 3.7.

Another perfect example of Atlantic wines. Made with less % of whole bunches, this lighter version of Listan Negro gives us well integrated tannin and higher acidity wine. Some at my recent presentation said that it would be perfect paining for fatty Lamb dishes and I couldn’t agree more. Decanting is recommended. Very elegant style with a lot of character. Wine is still developing. Note of red currant with slightly crispy tannin are perhaps the one that strange out. Will definitely improve with time.
