The high plateau in the north of the region is Monastrell’s great territory. In Jumilla it grows on sandy, limestone soils, with many old ungrafted vines, and makes reds with ripe black fruit, body and notes of wild herbs. Yecla, one of the few appellations covering a single municipality, makes reds in a similar style, often a little fresher. And Almansa, just over the border in Albacete, blends Monastrell with deep-coloured Garnacha Tintorera.
