Scala Dei Cartoixa 2020

This dry red wine from D.O.Ca. Priorat is crafted by Cellers de Scala Dei from Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena. It features aromas of red fruits and herbs, a medium body with fine tannins, and a long, dry finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Garnacha Tinta, Cariñena
  • D.O. / Region: D.O.Ca. Priorat
  • Winery: Cellers de Scala Dei
  • Soil / Altitude: Clay and slate (licorella) at 400-800 meters of altitude
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: Aged in foudres, oak barrels, and concrete tanks

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from old vines averaging 65 years of age, grown on terraced slopes. These vineyards are situated at altitudes between 400 and 800 meters, rooted in soils of clay and the region's signature licorella slate.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Harvested by hand, the grapes undergo whole-cluster fermentation separated by individual plots. The wine is aged in large foudres and oak barrels, followed by a final three months of refinement in concrete tanks.

Why buy it

This red wine showcases the historic heritage of the region and offers great cellaring potential. It is an excellent choice to complement structured meat dishes. To enhance your collection, you can buy Scala Dei Cartoixa 2020 online directly from our shop.

Cartoixa refers to the nearby monastery - produced since 1974 a bottle we were also presented (not tasted as they only have 50 bottles left). Classic representation of Garnacha 75% and Carinena 25% both around 60 years old vines from altitude 500-800m higher than most wineries in the region. This vintage had a lot of rain adding freshness in the end. Bought another bottle to retaste in the future. Probably my favorite given its price point vs the prior entry level blend. Abv 14,5%.

Nice signature wine made in the first vintage in 1974. Some intensity, red fruits, strawberry and slate. Nice body in the mouth, some intensity. Still a little grippy although with food I suspect it will be fine. Drink know or hold another 5+ years

Dry cherries, pomegranate, plum, dried herbs, roses, vanilla, iron minerality, , leather and soft potting soil, olive brine. Nice smooth grip on the tannins, light yet concentrated on the palate. Medium+ well integrated acidity with a soft juicy profile. Lots of finesse, very nice balance. Long, complex. Beautiful.

After having tasted the Prior cuvée it's now time to scale up and taste the Cartoixa. Medium ruby red coloured blend. Garnacha (80%) and Cariñena (20%). Old vines of 65 years on steep slopes with llicorella soil. Aging: 18 months partly in oak barrels. Cherry, raspberry, cranberry, pomegranate, plum, tobacco with earthy touch. Powerful. This cuvée doesn't seem to be better than the Prior. Maybe it's the vintage. Medium+ bodied. 90 pts

Kind of French-style blend, but with Spanish flavor, light to drink, pepper notes. Besides that - cherry, plum, blackberry. Overall - as if Pino started to speak Spanish.

£26 Waitrose. Good wine, quite high acidity, high alcohol, sharp red fruit on palate. Cherry, redcurrant. More upfront fruit driven, lacks strong middle and end. Not bad, better with food.

Barcelona trip 🍷🇪🇸 Scala Dei visit and tasting. Just a beautiful blend from Scala Dei Priorat. Lovely dark ruby color. The blend between Syrah, Grenache on rock soil and Cab and Carignan is a power house. Full of tannins and acidity +. a great mix of red berries, cassis, jam and red fruits. Just f**** great.

This is an interesting nose with spicy notes of cinnamon and clove together with black cherry and black currant. Medium tannins with leather notes in a palate.

Notes of plum, black cherry, pepper, leather, and vanilla. There are firm tannins, high alcohol, and heavy oak, leading to a very potent wine that for me seems clumsy and out of balance, which is particularly disappointing given the high praise from RPWA.
