Giovanni Rosso Donna Margherita Barbera d'Alba 2023

A dry red wine from the DOC Barbera d'Alba, crafted by the Giovanni Rosso winery in Piedmont. It features a juicy profile with expressive red fruit, lively acidity, and a persistent finish with cherry notes.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Barbera
  • D.O. / Region: DOC Barbera d'Alba (Piedmont)
  • Winery: Giovanni Rosso
  • Soil / Altitude: Altitude between 350 and 520 meters above sea level
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: Several months in large 50 hl oak casks

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from family-owned vineyards situated at altitudes ranging from 350 to 520 meters above sea level. These plots feature various expositions on the hillsides, which ensures balanced ripening while preserving the natural freshness of the variety.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks with daily pump-overs. The wine is then aged for several months in large 50-hectoliter oak casks to refine its structure.

A good Barbera with a deep purple color; the aroma and flavor feature red fruits with dark fruit in the background, along with notes of oak, earthy, spice, and yeasty. A well-balanced Barbera with medium acidity and pleasant tannins; dry, with a fruity finish—a great wine for a barbecue. 🍷🍷👍🏻😃👌🏻

Light bodied with a strawberry opening with taste of cherry and an ever so slightly dry closing.

On a ordinary Tuesday, on Oslo, the summer is not quite over and a semi spicy pasta tube lasagne with many ingredients is served, accompanied by this rich Ang lasting red wine with tastes of Cherry, plum, oak and dark berries. Enjoyed with great company from BC, Majorstuen skole 1973.

Really nice! A red wine I would actually drink. Cherry, blackcurrent, and leather on the nose for me. Cherry, blackberry, and a hint of pepper on the palette. A bit of acidity, light body.

Dry, medium ruby Barbera from Alba. In the nose and on the palate medium+ intense aromas and flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry, plum, raspberry, red cherry, smoke, coffee, leather. High acidity, medium/ soft tannins, medium body and alcohol, medium+ finish. Very good wine, not suitable for bottle ageing.

Medium ruby colour. Medium (-) and youthful nose with ripe red cherry, ripe raspberry, almonds, dried herbs and violet. Medium taste of ripe red cherry, ripe red currant, almonds, ripe blackberry, black pepper and dried herbs. Long and dry finish. High acidity. Low tannins. Medium body. A very good Barbera d’Alba that is well made. Drink now or over the next five years. Goes well with duck, pork or veal.

From a fun winemaker tasting. Bright, pretty nose. Fruit forward. Black cherry, red cherry, blackberry, with some violet and wet leaves. Palate is incredibly light and delicate, leaning more on black fruit. Medium+ acidity, medium- tannins, medium+ finish.

Barbera from 350–520 m around Serralunga. Hand picked, destemmed; 10–15 days in steel with daily pump-overs and one délestage; a few months in 50 hl botti. 2023 is sharp and juicy: sour cherry, red plum, blueberry, violets, a line of anise. Palate is dry, brisk and linear; acidity leads, tannin fine, oak just a frame. 13% abv; good proper acidity. Pour 14–16 °C. Built for tajarin and sausage, or charcuterie. Honest, focused Barbera—fruit narrow, finish on citrus peel and salt. Serve now–2029. Decant briefly. Cool.

A friendly, fruit-forward Barbera that keeps things charmingly simple. Juicy cherry and ripe plum burst from the glass, with a dash of herbs and a touch of spice. It’s bright and lively, the kind of wine that begs for a wood-fired pizza, a candlelit table, and zero overthinking. The texture is smooth yet zippy, balancing ripeness with that trademark Italian bite. No heavy oak, no drama - just honest, easygoing pleasure. You sip, you smile, you move on, wondering if every weekday red could taste this uncomplicated.

2025-09-23 Wine #2 on Norm Wines Vol. 4 Beautiful wine I never tire of drinking - the absolute essence of value. Honestly, blind you'd guess Nebbiolo before Barbera. Flowers drift through cherry and blackberry, earth and spice beneath, with properly high tannins and crackling acidity. It's wound tight as a spring right now, practically vibrating with tension, but already brilliant to drink. This is why I keep coming back - proper serious wine that doesn't take your wallet hostage.

Opens with a delightful acidity, that grows into a very drinkable wine with light fruity notes. I thoroughly enjoyed this wine!

Rustic red with some angular edges but I think this is the type of wine that local drinks ? Overall a good one with some hints of minerality, earthy undertones and some fruits of cherry tomatoes leaf
