Gerard Raphet Bourgogne Rouge 2023

This dry red Pinot Noir comes from the prestigious Bourgogne region, crafted by the historic Gerard Raphet winery. It features aromas of red fruits with a subtle earthy undertone, offering a soft, round palate and a slightly rustic finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Pinot Noir
  • D.O. / Region: Bourgogne
  • Winery: Gerard Raphet
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 12-18 months in French oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from vineyards cultivated under the lutte raisonnée approach, which prioritizes organic practices and minimizes chemical treatments. The plots are located in the prominent areas of Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest and rigorous sorting, fermentation is carried out using natural yeasts. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, with a low proportion of new oak to preserve the pure fruit character of the grape.

100% Pinot Noir Aromas of fruits like strawberry, dark cherry, raspberry, plum, and mulberry. Subtle nuances of spices like cinnamon and clove. There is also earthiness and a mineral sensation. It has a crisp, beautiful acidity, and the tannins are delicate and very well integrated, giving a silky mouthfeel. The transparent, beautiful aromas persist pleasantly, and in the end, they cleanly fade away with a mineral sensation. But… Honestly, it lacked complexity and felt a bit underwhelming.

Just a bomb! Fresh, nice acidity pushing the wine forward. Rhubarb in the mouth. Violets and liquorice in the nose. Very nicely bound and smooth wood.

Have too much of acidity. It has only 13% of alcohol which is relatively low regarding red wine. But might feel it is too much of alcohol because of high acidity.

Surprisingly 21 is the best vintage i’ve had of the base level…suspect a fair amount of prem fruit declassified. Morey nose, but the mouth is more Gevrey. Acidity high as would expect for a 21. Recommended

Beautiful magenta. Elegant wine with finesse. Just ripe raspberries shine through, brilliant acidity with wet slate immediately after the fruit followed by forest floor and tart plum. Drank in summer 2023 completely on its own and was lovely.

Very tasty! Cherry, raspberry, tomato leaf, yummy! Some baking spices, some forest floor/mushroom (few years ago). High acid. Medium body and intensity. Smooth medium tannins. Short crisp finish. Very good regional Burg.

Deep red colour! A bit strange on the nose, but oh what a delight on the palate. When warm it turns into juicy cherry and when a bit chilled I get lost of strawberries.

This is a delicious Bourgogne which shows just how good the ‘19 vintage can be. In my opinion, it is far better than the Bourgogne from Raphet in previous years, with lovely Pinot fruit up front sitting happily with tangy fresh acid. Mouth filling and more-ish. The Village Chambolle Musigny is a grade better and confirms how good 2019 can be. Such good drinking now, don’t wait for these to get better.

A bit muted at first, but then the strawberries and cassis come through. Pleasing. Med acidity and tannic. Juicy and rounded. Not overly complex but just delicious. Very good. 14 pts @ Le Vineur

Smooth cherry notes are completely dominating on the nose. Also notes of blueberry and pastry with hints of shallots and tomatoes. The palate feels like well-balanced and saturated cherry compote with vanilla, moderate acidity and tannins. No complexity or depth but quaffable anyways. Med length cherry pie finish.

Summary: a little unhinged and nervous, but not bad. Enjoyable and easy drinking. On the nose: hints of strawberry, cherry, some licorice, some fresh herbs, and earthy tones. On the palate: quite nervous and a little raw. Slightly closed yet open at the same time. Interesting. Points: 14

Elegant and enjoyable wine. Feels a bit closed still, lacks a bit of concentration, this will improve over time probably. 15% new oak used. Medium+ intense aromas of fresh strawberry, ripe cherry, cranberry, forest floor, milk chocolate, liquorice wood, ricola pastilles. Dry wine, high acidity, low tannins, medium body, medium+ flavour intensity, medium+ length finish. Bourgogne rouge deep dive @ Le Vineur

A ‘simple’ Bourgogne rouge sourced from Gevrey soil with young vines and no oak aging - easy to digest elegant perfume of red forrest fruit. Good pqr. @LeVineur. Will age nicely. Really small allocations and sought after wines. Also highly regarded by Kermit lynch one of my favorite international importers.

100% declassified Gevrey 🇫🇷 fruit. Grown on red clay and silt. 40 year old vines. Aged in old oak barrels for 18 months. Fruit is quite ripe. Black cherry, red cherry, stewed plum, cinnamon, clove, cola, and earthy. Malo vibes on the finish. Had by the glass at Bar Gobo.
