The vineyard

The grapes are sourced entirely from La Plana, a unique vineyard planted in 1950. This plot is located at the highest point of Finca Ygay, at an altitude of 485 meters, where the conditions promote balanced ripening.

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest, the varieties are fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. The Tempranillo is aged in American oak barrels and the Mazuelo in French oak for 34 months, before being blended and rested for 20 months in concrete vats.

A privilege to taste this one side by side with a Remirez de Ganuza Gran Reserva. Perfumed nose which improved with some aeration. So much to smell and taste. I love the more lean and acidity in this Ygay. Sour cherry with green herbs like thyme, some spices from oak and smooth but present tannins. Enormous length. Delicious with mushroom risotto. Still young but so delicious.

Rioja Rockstar! I have enjoyed several older vintages in the past. My first go at 2012 and it doesn’t disappoints. Boom! Deep Garnet*. Dried berries with cranberry, blackberry, oak, leather, vanilla. Developing well. Dry, medium+ body, dancing effortlessly, just about high alcohol with 14% but no drama of course. A gentle tannic grip that reinforce a healthy structure. Fresh acidity. Flavours are transitioning slowly. Still fruit freshness, but also earthy minerals and dried flowers and chocolate. Fantastic!
