Castello di Ama Chianti Classico 2021

This dry red wine from the DOCG Chianti Classico is crafted by the Castello di Ama winery using Sangiovese and Merlot. It features a ruby red color, fresh red fruit aromas of cherry and raspberry, and a harmonious palate with subtle spicy notes.

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from young estate vineyards planted at a high density of 5,200 vines per hectare. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand to ensure the optimal selection of the fruit.

Winemaking

Each grape variety undergoes fermentation separately in stainless steel tanks with manual pump-overs. Following malolactic fermentation, the blend is assembled and aged in second-use oak barrels.

Greetings from Tokyo. Japan trip wine #6 was a Chianti Classico. Had BTG at a 40th floor hotel bar. Mostly Sangiovese with 4% Merlot. Notes of cherry, saddle leather, cigar and menthol. Medium bodied with chewy tannins and a svelte finish. From young vines and 13.5% alcohol. Ready to drink at a young age. Again no Japanese wines in the joint so I went with a good CC that I sipped while viewing the amazing Tokyo skyline from 40 stories high.

Full-body but lacks of both depth and finesse. Moreover, without vibrant acidity, some fruit-forward sweetness is quickly followed by overwhelming salinity.

Honestly a fantastic Chianti Classico that impressed me with the rustic and aged texture. Very complex nose with red & dark fruits, dried Italian herbs, and plenty of earthiness & oak. On the palate getting rustic red cherry and raspberry, with floral notes and some thyme. Finish is pretty leathery with some sandalwood, vanilla, blackberry, balsamic, and potting soil. Long deep finish with medium plus tannins and medium plus acidity. Really great for the price.
