Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal 2020

Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal 2020 is a dry red wine from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in South Africa. It offers a complex aromatic profile of ripe red fruits, subtle spices, and earthy undertones, complemented by a silky texture and a balanced finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Mourvèdre
  • D.O. / Region: Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, South Africa
  • Winery: Bouchard Finlayson
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 12 months in French oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from mature, low-yielding vineyards in the cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. This region's proximity to the ocean ensures moderate temperatures, allowing the Italian and French grape varieties to develop concentrated flavors while retaining natural acidity.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest, the grapes undergo alcoholic fermentation in tanks, followed by an extended malolactic fermentation. The components are then blended and aged for twelve months in French oak barrels before bottling.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a unique red wine for your cellar, this blend offers a fascinating bridge between Italian tradition and South African terroir. Its balanced structure makes it highly versatile for pairing with spicy dishes or artisanal cheeses. You can buy Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal 2020 online directly from our boutique.

Lovely bold and smooth wine, palate more impressive than nose. The blend disguises any particular cultivar, but overall a lovely experience.

Revisiting this mad blend. 41% Sangiovese, 26% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbera, 9% Shiraz, 8% Pinot Noir, 6% Mourvedre. Red cherry, raspberry, smoke. Touch of charcuterie & paprika, leather too. Very smooth & drinkable but with structure too. Vg.

Interesting blend of Italian and French grapes. Quite round & woody, lacks a bit of personality but drinks quite well

This elegant wine strikes a balance between complexity and lightness, with high acidity that provides freshness and precision. The blend is thought-provokingly unique, with a nose that offers dried violet, iron oxide, and earthy forest floor aromas, adding an intriguing layer of character. On the palate, firm, well-defined tannins provide structure, while meaty textures give the wine a satisfying, weighty mouthfeel.

Never had such an interesting mix of grapes (Italian and French), but it works great. Coffee notes and dark fruit. Some cedar and vanilla from well dosed oak aging. Perfect match with venison 🍷🇿🇦

2020 vintage. Helps to know in advance that this is an Italian grape blend of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, both of which have quite high levels of acidity. Red fruit on the palate, graphite maybe, with good minerality. Good with food, long finish. Not tannic but can tell has structure to last. Needs more time but good already.

Ripe red cherry, blackcurrant, violet pomegranate, oak, cedar, charred wood. Tannins are still young, high acidity, fresh.

A thought-provokingly unique blend. Dried violet, iron oxide and earthy forest growth accent a firm and well defined tannin. Focussed and meaty textures leaves a lasting impression of effortless weight. Reserved, yet boasting fine intensity and exciting length, hints at rewarding potential lying in wait.
