Algueira Fincas 2018

This dry red wine from D.O. Ribeira Sacra is crafted by the Algueira winery using the indigenous Caíño and Sousón grape varieties. It features aromas of red fruit, balsamic notes, and a herbal profile, balanced by high acidity, firm tannins, and a long, mineral finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Caíño, Sousón
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Ribeira Sacra
  • Winery: Algueira
  • Soil / Altitude: Slate soils, south-facing orientation
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 18 months in French oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from south-facing vineyards planted on steep slate soils in Ribeira Sacra. This terroir benefits from a unique Mediterranean microclimate with a strong Atlantic influence, which lends freshness and a distinct mineral character to the vines.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

The traditional winemaking process involves foot-treading the grapes in 300-liter wooden casks and fermenting with 100% whole clusters using wild yeasts. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels to develop depth and structure.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a structured dry red wine with an Atlantic character and great aging potential, this bottle is an excellent addition to your cellar. Its vibrant profile and refined tannins will elevate your dining experience. You can buy Algueira Fincas 2018 online directly from our boutique.

Pivene annual warehouse event. Caino Tinto and Souzon, indigenous grape varietals that are somewhat like ancient varietals in the region of Ribera Sacra. Slightly herbaceous character. Better impression of it this time round. Rewarding structure.

This is described as ‘ancestral varietals’ as the 2 grapes are native to Ribeira Sacra, although many plantings are gone. This is a ruby color, very dry with rough strong tannins and acid to match. More of a mineral or slate character comes through instead of fruit, so this wine seems like it is missing something, but is still complex and enjoyable, and would pair this with a selection of foods.

Blend of indigenous varieties Caiño and Sousón. Great nose, with herbaceous notes. The most rustic of the estate’s wines tasted.

A good indication of the ageworthiness of good Ribeira Sacras (Souson and Caño grapes). Full ripe fruit aromas of balsamico and brown sugar. The palate however is elegant and displays well developed cool minty red fruit of raspberry and strawberry, bitter herbs with a dry mineral finish.

Blackberry, plum. Star anise and balsamic notes. A bit of ethyl acetate. Some cola nut character, also some charred notes. Developing some tertiary funk. Maybe some chocolate. Very high acidity, sharp but mild tannin. Mineral finish.

Really nice fresh Mencia. Atlantic souvenirs. Light body but relatively intense flavour. A fantastic for conversation, as a refreshment. But it will keep the conversation itself as the starring character Aromas of wild strawberries. Forestry. Fresh pine tree leaves (but not the resin). Young but elegant woods. Eucaliptus. A hint of white chocolate. In mouth, it has a constant fruity bitter intense personality. It keeps this same personality for a long while. Balsamic.
