Suertes Del Marqués Las Suertes 2022

Las Suertes 2022 is a dry red wine made from Listán Negro by the Suertes del Marqués winery in the D.O. Valle de La Orotava. It offers aromas of dried flowers and wild berries, balanced by a linear acidity and structured tannins on the palate.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Listán Negro
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Valle de La Orotava
  • Winery: Suertes del Marqués
  • Soil / Altitude: Sandy loam over volcanic rock, 480-520 m
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 11 months in 500L barrels

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from El Ciruelo, a small plot of centenarian vines cultivated using the traditional cordón trenzado (braided cord) system. Situated at an altitude of 480 to 520 meters, this north-facing vineyard features sandy loam soils over volcanic rock.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Fermentation takes place with whole bunches in unlined concrete vats. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages for 11 months in 500-liter oak barrels to preserve its mineral character.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a cellar-worthy wine with a distinctive mineral profile, this Canary Island red is an excellent addition to your collection. Its balance of freshness and concentration pairs beautifully with poultry and meat dishes. To experience this unique volcanic expression, you can buy Suertes Del Marqués Las Suertes 2022 online directly from our boutique.

One of the very finest producers of the island, its Vidonia VP hats down my best ever tasted Listan Blanco. This Listan Negro comes from tiny 0.8 ha single vineyard planted between 1926-46, soil of sandy loam & volcanic rock, whole bunch fermentation, aged for 11 months in used FR oak. Medium ruby colour. Medium+ intensity aroma of cherries, wild strawberries, roses, undergrowth. Medium body, lean and lively, tense structure, full of fresh red fruits, smoky hints, grippy high tannins. 91

Monovarietal Listan Negro from Tenerife’s headline producer. 500m elevation, centenary ungrafted vines, El Ciruelo single plot. Whole bunch fermentation, 11m in neutral French oak. Nervous strawberry, basalt, iron, dry earth, dried red flower petals, lots and lots of petals. High, crisp acidity. Expressive, earthy, leathery palate with notable volcanic soil influence. Sandy, dusty tannin. Full of tension and bursting with youthful energy. Needs breathing time, so don’t rush it.

Feather light body, good acidity, fine-grained tannins and notes of cherries, red fruit and some struck match. A good wine, feather light and fresh.

Not the best listan negro I've tried, but still interesting. Light bodied and more vegetal than tomato. Light red fruits with raspberry and strawberry and some sulphurous volcanic notes. Quite dry and acidic in the mouth with some notable tannins. Medium acidic finish.

Suertes del Marqués horizontal degustation. Signature label of the winery doesn’t have an option to not impress - it’s the stunning incorporation of true style. 100% Listan Negro from 80-100 yo vines planted at 480-520 m asl at 0.8 ha El Ciruelo vineyards in La Orotava (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands) fermented in open top concrete and aged for 11 months in oak. Dark crimson colour with pale rims. Aroma of rose garden after rain, wild strawberry, red currant, sheep&goat excrements and red currant parfait 🔽

It’s classic Canary: Smoky, savory, bright and fresh, but with a surprisingly deep and complex structure. Give it a good, vigorous decant for 1 to 2 hours and it really starts to shine. In the glass, it’s a shimmering, semi-transparent garnet-red moving to pink at the rim, with a bevy of red fruits and humid, smoky earth notes on the nose. Aromas and flavors of red cherry, cranberry, and blood orange surf a savory wave of cured meat, underbrush, black pepper, and a generous dusting of volcanic ash.

Continuing my wine exploration. This from 100+ yr old pre-phylloxera vines of Listán Negro. Also contains a small percentage of Listán Blanco. The former is a native variety that is found only on the Canary Islands, whereas the latter is the local name for Palomino. Intense volcanic character. Florals. Red fruit. Crushed rock. Spice. Tannin is very refined, seamless on the palate, and very persistent. Excellent, if slightly lean. Really enjoying it but not as ethereal as the Envinate Parcela Margalagua.

Quite an individual wine. Cork with this producer does scare me a little but hopefully they have diam across the range now as the entry level I had recently did. Layered mouthfeel, red fruit, minerality, earthy, savory notes. Medium+ austere tannins frame the flavour profile. High acidity gives quite a bit of drive on long finish. Glassy note similar to Freisa is super refreshing. Would like to try more as they remind me of the best of Etna while being their own beast.

Barrel tasting at the bodega 100% Listán Negro. 90% whole bunch fermented. This comes from their best vineyard which has proved itself reliable year on year. Milky. Peppery tannins. Listán Negro in character, but since it was harvested about 6 weeks previously, it’s really difficult for me to know how this will develop (those more familiar with “Las Suertes” would have a better idea). Fascinating experience to taste from various barrels in development before tasting the final bottled products.

Single vineyard Listán Negro grown on Cordón Trenzado at 500m altitude. 90% whole bunch fermented on natural yeast. Aged 11 months in neutral French oak. Young, but showing its potential. This one has a more serious structure than some of the other reds. Light vegetable/herbal note, slightly drying tannins and light, soft saline minerality. Intriguing, juicy, but like blackcurrant with herbal notes. According to the Wine maker, Jonatan, this one will develop layers as ages

Excellent volcanic wine. It needs air to develop. Tannic but with light body - very interesting. Red fruit, smoke, significant after taste.

What an underrated gem. Cherry, spices and smoke. Medium bodied and vibrant. It isn’t cheap, but way above the vivino rating.
