Sierra Cantabria Colección Privada 2023

A dry red wine from D.O. Ca. Rioja, crafted entirely from Tempranillo by Viñedos Sierra Cantabria. It reveals intense aromas of wild berries, pastry, and spices, leading to a concentrated, velvety palate with subtle hints of coffee.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: 100% Tempranillo
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Ca. Rioja
  • Winery: Viñedos Sierra Cantabria
  • Soil / Altitude: Clay-limestone
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 16 months in new French and American oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from the historic Valgrande and Jararte vineyards in San Vicente de Sonsierra. Planted in the late 1950s, these old vines thrive in clay-limestone soils, which impart excellent structure and balance to the fruit.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

The winemaking process combines fifty percent destemmed grapes with fifty percent whole clusters. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes ageing for sixteen months in new French and American oak barrels.

Excellent full bodied Rioja Tempranillo. Deep garnet red, black fruit like plum and blackberry. Minerals, leather, earthy, tobacco, complex, strong but soft tannins, long finish.

Top Rioja made the family Eguren who owns different wineries in the appellation and also Teso la Monja in Toro. 50% while cluster semi-carbonic maceration and 50% destemmed maceration. Deep ruby red. Aging for 16 months in new French and American barriques. Cherry, blackberry, plum, chocolate, tobacco, vanilla and cedar wood. Juicy and concentrated on the palate. Serious backbone with a smooth mouthfeeling. Full bodied. 92 pts.

Not a big fan of Sierra Cantabria, but this is pretty good. Deep ruby color. Smooth and elegant. Notes of oak, vanilla, red fruit, blackberry leather, dark chocolate and cinnamon. Medium tannins. Long finish. Excellent balance 👍

Super rare and found at the wine shop near Clink of BCN. Rich fruit flavor but not sweet. Typical great Rioja! Closer to El Puntio or Gaudium. Takes min 1 hour to open up. Still too much acidity after 1.5 hour. Need more time but great one!!

Clear medium ruby in color with medium(+) intensity and notes of raspberry, red cherry, bramble, dried herbs, cloves, cedar, mushroom. This wine is dry with medium(+) acidity, medium(+) fine-grained tannins, high alcohol, medium body, and a medium finish. A very good wine that can last 5-10 years and is suitable for bottle ageing. 91/100

More aromatic and juicy than typical Riojas. Sweet spice nose. Black cherry, vanilla, much oak tannins, blackberry, plum, blueberry, some dry herbs. Good balance of acidity and tannins. Still young, at least 10 years of aging potential. I had it without food and it went great.

Made in a small town at foot of Sierra Cantabria in the DO. A single variety Tempranillo from 50 year old vines has a deep Ruby red color and aged for 18 months in French and American oak. Aromas of red fruit and spice. On the palate ripe black fruit, fine tannins, well balanced with a medium+ finish ending with fruit, spice and some oak notes. Nice!
