Paolo Leo Passo del Cardinale Primitivo di Manduria 2024

A dry red wine made from the Primitivo grape in the DOC Primitivo di Manduria, Puglia. It features aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, and coconut, with a well-balanced body and silky tannins on the palate.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Primitivo

  • D.O. / Region: DOC Primitivo di Manduria (Puglia)

  • Winery: Paolo Leo

  • Soil / Altitude: Sandy soils

  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 3 months in American oak barrels, 6 months in stainless steel tanks

The vineyard

The grapes come from 40-year-old vines grown in the traditional Apulian bush-trained system (alberello) on sandy soils in Taranto. Significant diurnal temperature shifts help preserve acidity and ensure optimal ripening.

Winemaking

Following temperature-controlled fermentation and extended skin maceration, the wine is aged for three months in American oak barrels and six months in stainless steel tanks to balance freshness and complexity.

3,9: 86 point (16), B ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Recommended, Bronze. The ratings are based on the wine’s overall flavor profile—including the interplay between flavor notes and the general impression of body and nuances relative to the wine type. Emphasis is placed on the balance between primary, secondary, and tertiary notes; the overall structure regarding sweetness, acidity, tannins, alcohol, and body; and the nature of the acidity profile, dryness, and varietal characteristics. Complexity and quality are also assessed.

Excellent. Deep purple color. Nose is pure Puglia; upfront black fruit with pumice balsamic oak and ash as it airs. Palate is punchy black fruit at times overpowering rich and thick mouthfeel. Lingering finish. Had this on its own but might be better with a ribeye steak.

Quite light bodied and low on tannins for a Primitivo but works well with such well balanced black and fruit, gentle oak and chocolate notes. Excellent quality to price.

Lush and fruit-forward, this youthful red brims with ripe plum, raspberry coulis, and hints of vanilla and sweet spice. The palate is velvety, with gentle tannins and a warming core that speaks of sun-drenched ripeness. Though still primary, it shows poise and charm, with a lingering, softly spiced finish. Pair with slow-roasted pork shoulder and fennel to highlight the wine’s plush texture and generous, fruit-driven character.
