Envínate Migan Tinto 2022

This dry red wine from D.O.P. Islas Canarias, crafted by Envínate, is characterized by its distinct Atlantic profile. It offers aromas of wild berries, white pepper, and mineral undertones, supported by soft tannins and balanced acidity.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Listán Negro
  • D.O. / Region: D.O.P. Islas Canarias
  • Winery: Envínate
  • Soil / Altitude: Volcanic sand and clay, at altitudes between 350 and 600 meters
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 11 months in used French oak barrels

The vineyard

The Listán Negro grapes originate from two historic vineyards in Tenerife, cultivated using the traditional cordón trenzado method. The La Habanera plot, located at 600 meters on volcanic sand, provides freshness, while San Antonio, at 350 meters on clay, adds structure.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest, the grapes ferment in concrete vats with varying proportions of whole clusters. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages for 11 months in neutral French oak barrels, bottled without fining or filtration.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a wine with a strong volcanic identity and limited production, this selection will make an excellent addition to your cellar. Its vibrant freshness ensures great aging potential. You can buy Envínate Migan Tinto 2022 online directly from our shop.

Medium ruby; nose of wild berries, pomegranate, bitter cherry, violet, black pepper, flint and volcanic stone. The palate is light to medium-bodied and vibrant, with tangy red fruit, citrus zest, fine dusty tannins, smoky mineral grip and a long, savory finish. From 100% Listán Negro on 100-year-old vines trained in the traditional cordon trenzado on volcanic soils in La Orotava, Tenerife, 75% whole-cluster, fermented with native yeasts in cement and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Decanted 30min

Interesting - intense red fruit with some smoke and mineral tones. Didn’t known it was from volcanic terroir when I tasted it but it fits….

From 100+yo organic listan negro in Tenerife's Orotava Valley, majority whole bunches, 11m in neutral oak. The initial aroma is overwhelming reduction, volcanic mineral smoke and animal hide. The sulphur dissipates over 2 hours for more fruit and florals, raspberry, rose, earth and orange peel. Light on the palate, 12% ABV, crushed volcanic rock, white pepper and bitter herbs, medium(+) acidity. A lovely, characterful wine, great value at £27 in The Wine Society summer clearance sale at the moment.

Clean Smokey but fruity. Taste like eating fresh berries next to a camp fire.

The aroma is reductive and animalistic, with lots of brett: roasted garlic, leather, manure, and virtually no berries. The palate is medium-bodied, rather neutral in balance: lingonberry, redcurrant, and leather.

A fascinating expression of Tenerife's volcanic terroir. Mineral-driven with an almost stony character taking centre stage. There's clear structure, but the tannins aren't silky—they're smooth in a fine, gravelly way that gives the wine texture without aggression. More about rocks, savouriness and place than generous fruit. Not quite my preferred style, but an interesting and well-crafted wine.

Artisan Cellars Monthly Tasting session. First bottle slightly corked. Second bottle was ok. Brett is quite prominent on the nose and grew more prominent with aeration. 100% old vine Listán Negro from 2 plots 100+yr old ungrafted vines at 350-600m in the La Orotava area of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands.60% from more volcanic sand and 40% from clay rich soil. Different plots vinified separately before blending. Aged 11mths in 228L and 600L used French barrels, with malolactic conversion. Fresh palate, Bretty nose.

Opened this after unpacking at our Airbnb in the Yorkshire Dales. One that I had my eye on at TWS, confirmed by @[1|16864830|David 85]'s experiences. Foot- trodden Listan Negro from Tenerife. Rhubarb, pomegranate & wild raspberry. Saline & smoldering, smoky, crushed rocks. There's a surprising amount of tannin & plenty of acid, with a long finish. Excellent stuff.

One week later and this is still going strong. If anything, it’s probably just about at its peak right now. Still showing very strong minerality, but the reductiveness has settled down. Slightly chilled and in a burgundy Zalto…just beautiful.

After-party wines from Friday, 2 of 3 - Envinate wines seem to divide opinion on Vivino but they’re right up my street and I knew @[1|1394404|Riaan] was a fan, so I brought this along. For those unfamiliar, the wine is from the Canary Islands and made from indigenous grape Listran Negre. If you like reductive, under-extracted wines, then this will be your thing. Let the wine breathe and the nose blow off and you get an amazing red fruit purity plus a clear volcanic ash presence and then a cool herbal finish.

Very elegant and rustic. Bretty wild yeast nose mostly blows off after an hour decant, unveiling a light, finely boned cherry, smoke, barnyard and earthy palate with bursting juicy acidity. Silky tannins. Stays natty but not overwhelmingly so. Probably what Gweneth Paltrow’s horse stables smells like. Smelly, yet oh, so classy and chic. Gains depth over time. Perfectly paired with Peking duck. With Christiano

By the glass at Where's Nick. Of a kinship with pelaverga with crunchy red fruit and a touch of white pepper/spice, minerality too. Nice freshness with medium+ acidity and good tannin structure and drive on a lengthy finish. Delightful gear!

Dry wine, high acidity, medium- and supple tannins, light body, pronounced flavour intensity, long finish. 12% ABV - 10x Potato tasting @ Wijnbar Pinot

Envínate, founded 2005 by four oenology graduates, rescues century-old Atlantic vineyards. Migán 2021: 100% Listán Negro from 3 parcels (100+ years old) in La Orotava Valley, Tenerife, 400-600m elevation. Volcanic/clay/basalt soils. Organic. Parcels vinified separately. 12 days concrete fermentation, indigenous yeast. 11 months neutral French oak/concrete. Ethereal, mineral-driven red with redcurrant, cherry, volcanic salinity. Polished tannins, stunning length.

Quite reductive upon opening. After half an hour of swirling, a lot of sour cherry strawberry raspberry came out, intertwined with flint stone savory characters. A medium light body wine with pleasantly sharp acidity, smooth tannins. The palate is slightly less impressive as the complex nose though. Quite typical Canary Islands style. Will give it a try again tmr when it is oxidised slightly more (update: not much development in the following days except getting more acidic🤪)
