Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2023

A dry white wine made from Chardonnay grapes by the renowned Cloudy Bay Vineyards in the Marlborough region. It features aromas of white nectarine and citrus, complemented by a creamy texture and vibrant mineral acidity.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Chardonnay
  • D.O. / Region: Marlborough
  • Winery: Cloudy Bay Vineyards
  • Soil / Altitude: Gravel and deep clay soils
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 11 months on lees

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from selected vineyards in the Wairau Valley and the Southern Valleys. The combination of alluvial gravels and deep clay soils provides structural complexity and a distinct mineral freshness to the wine.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

After gentle pressing, the must ferments in French oak barrels and large wooden vats. Ageing on fine lees for eleven months, combined with complete malolactic fermentation, develops its characteristic volume and roundness on the palate.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a prestigious dry white wine for your collection, this Marlborough classic is an excellent choice. Its balance of freshness and structure ensures great versatility with fine dining. You can buy Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2023 online directly from our shop to experience a true New Zealand benchmark.

This is a decent New Zealand Chardonnay. There are tropical notes on the fruit, there is oak but there is also fabulous acidity and minerality. Another wine chosen to please Mr H, he rates this above many other wines I’ve pulled this year. Paired with roasted figs, cheese (truffled Brie and Shropshire blue) and honey. It works, that bit of oak with cheese is delicious.

Red apple, ripe lemon, pineapple and honeycomb. Slightly buttery texture with plenty of fresh acidity and fruitiness; i didnt manage to pick up any oak on the palate. Light and refreshing, medium+ finished.

Second tilt at this bad boy and my views are largely unchanged. Not a super-rich, buttery Chardy - more fresh & polished. 👁️ Pale straw / golden colour with a shimmer of green … bright and clean. 👃 White peach, nectarine, pear, citrus & toasted pine nuts. 👅 Dry, medium-bodied, fresh with a zippy citrus acidity followed by a subtle (but perfectly pitched) green-fruit edge. Paired with spicy chicken kebabs as well … yum! 💷 ✅✅✅ £35 a pop at Majestic. You’re buying consistent quality though so worth it.

Cloudy Bay is especially known for Sauvignon Blanc but these Chardonnay is pretty serious too! Oily and very buttery nose with ripe peach, dried apricots and mango followed by a mineralic, oily palate with beautiful, pronounced acidity, zesty yellow lemon, pineapple, white peach, some lychee and very long finish.

Decided to crack tonight cool-climate Chardonnay from the New World and highly acclaimed New Zealand winery - Cloudy Bay (founded in 1985 by Australian winemaker and Cape Mentelle founder David Hohnen). Marlborough, 2023. It’s more Burgundian than old word winemaking and it’s so suits to this wine. Fragrant and intense aromas of ripe nectarine, peach, lemon, notes of savoury, honey, herbs, spices and oak. Dry, refreshing medium-body, juicy and slightly elevated yet masterly integrated acidity, decently balanced, ⤵️

Very good smoky, toasty Chardonnay, with fresh white fruits, mineral notes, biscuit, pastry, cheese, long finish and refreshing acidity. A little zesty lemon, grapefruit, green melon, brine. Freshness combined with subtle oak. Good harmony.

At first, gentle oak and toasted almond drift from the glass, followed by the freshness of pear and green apple. Butter softly rounds the edges before vibrant lemon, grapefruit, and lime awaken the palate with crystalline minerality. As the wine opens, whispers of pineapple and ripe apricot intertwine with a delicate yeasty nuttiness, while a lingering lemon zest finish leaves the impression of a cool sea breeze on a bright spring morning.

Very nice chardonnay a little more on the acidic and mineral side, but pairs very well with oysters.

Good, but oak dominates. 13.5%, not mine, though Sauvignon Blanc of Cloudy Bay among my favorites whites

Citrus and peach on the palate, with subtle brioche and oak notes. Light- to medium-bodied with a slightly dry finish. While this is a well-made Chardonnay, my personal preference leans towards styles with more pronounced brioche and oak, so it doesn’t quite hit the spot for me.

🥂 Colour: Bright straw. 👃 Nose: Fresh, with notes of gunpowder, citrus, green apple, white peach and hints of oak and flint. 👅 Palate: Tight and elegant, with vibrant acidity, pure fruit, and subtle creaminess. Still young and structured, but with clear potential to gain depth and complexity over time.
