Clos de l'Écotard Saumur Blanc 2022

This dry white wine from AOC Saumur, crafted by Clos de l'Écotard, is a single-varietal Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley. It features fresh aromas of quince, mandarin, and pear, balanced by vibrant acidity and a broad, fleshy palate.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Chenin Blanc
  • D.O. / Region: AOC Saumur (Loire Valley)
  • Winery: Clos de l'Écotard
  • Soil / Altitude: Clay-limestone soils
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 18 months in oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes originate from ten-year-old organically farmed vineyards planted on clay-limestone soils. The estate prioritizes biodiversity, managing the land traditionally using horses to respect the natural rhythm of the soil.

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest and careful selection, the wine undergoes 18 months of aging in oak barrels, enhancing its texture and complexity while preserving the pure expression of the grape.

I was introduced to this wine by @[1|1260249|Robbie Priddle] earlier this year and liked it so much I bought some (from Lay & Wheeler). This is a proper Loire Chenin that absolutely speaks of its terroir. The wine has that classic waxy apple profile with feints of lemon and pineapple. But what makes it really work is the lovely soaring acidity and saline lick plus lingering finish.

Was excited to taste this w @[1|9845107|Alex GGunno]. Have read about Son & Father, Thibaud & Michel Chevré, but first time tasting. 3ha, southfacing, chalky, biodynamic site. A serious Saumur. Flavours exhibit the combo of hang time, oak and lees influence with pineapple, cooked apple and incense. It's also got a beautiful lick of saline. All this richness and spice comes in a foil of citrus freshness. Long and shapely. Will age. Great wine and terrific value amongst the trend of price-pushing Loire producers.

I love Michel Chevrè, an easy name to remember for an old-school, non-interventionist who used to work with Thierry Germain. This bottle is a bit young and needs air to fully open up, but the classic expression and immense potential are obvious. It boasts a rich profile of ripe stone fruit and quince, signaling that it is absolutely one for the cellar. If you want to see how his work ages, check out my review of the 2016 vintage. ABV: 13,5 %, TA: 6,9 g/L, RS: < 3 g/L. NOK 448 @ VMP. Drank @ Nyhetssmaking, Krysset

First out the case from Lay & Wheeler. Enjoyed with roasted chicken & aglio e olio. Very lightly effervescent. Strong tannins and mid body. Some lime leaf, jasmine and minerals.

Great chenin blanc. Bruised apple, wax. Med+ acidity. Balanced! Had some Chenins before that were all acidity and very little character. This is not the case here. Drinks wonderfully.

Feels almost tannic. Even though it is white. I think this will get much better with air.

Quick noted from a small wine fair showing new releases up here. Had this next to the Clos de la Huberdière from the same producer. A very different wine! This is more classic Loire chenin. More ripe juicy fruit, more concentration, richness and more of everything but still with nice acidity.

Bright zesty acidity, not too much but will keep this wine developing in complexity for another 5-10yrs. Beginning to show good texture and richness, pink lady apple notes on the palate with a hint of pineapple. Good minerality. Long finish.

Chenin from Courchamps on south-facing limestone, organically farmed. Hand-picked; native ferment in 400L & 228L barrels (1/3 new), 12 months on fine lees. 2016 is firm and saline: lemon oil, grapefruit rind, pear skin, white peach, fennel, wet chalk. Dry, linear palate with taut acidity and a light almond-pith grip; 12.5% keeps it clean. From Michel Chevré’s Clos de l’Écotard on clay-limestone over tuffeau. Finish is long, stony, precise. Built for shellfish, trout, simple poultry. Serve 10–11 °C; brief decant.

Dame! It was a good example of Chenin with some age. Not blow your socks off good but absolutely worked with the food and the bottle was still fresh and zingy with the added weight of age

Lunch at Romé. What have we here, a Loire CB with some age, of course we ordered this one to go with my truffle-ized carpaccio😉. Opening slightly matured yet with quite some fresh lemon whiffs too offering nuts, beeswax, zest lemon oil, bruised apples, apricots & crushed rock minerals. Some maturity on the nose, but none of this on the palate: this is fresh & even crispy with good lemony & Granny Smith acids covered by salty minerals ending quite long. This is underrated!
