Vega Sicilia VALBUENA 5° 2021

This dry red wine from D.O. Ribera del Duero, crafted by the Vega Sicilia winery, is a blend of Tempranillo and Merlot. It features aromas of ripe blackberry, cocoa, and graphite, supported by firm, polished tannins and a persistent finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Tempranillo, Merlot
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Ribera del Duero
  • Winery: Vega Sicilia
  • Soil / Altitude: Calcium-rich soils, 700-900 m altitude
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: Oak barrel and vat ageing, high cellaring potential

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from selected plots on gentle slopes with calcium-rich soils. The vineyards are situated at altitudes between 700 and 900 meters above sea level, with an average vine age of 35 years.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest in small boxes, the wine undergoes its initial ageing in oak barrels and large vats. It is then transferred exclusively to large oak vats to complete its refinement before bottling.

Why buy it

This red wine is an excellent choice for collectors seeking a cellar-worthy bottle with significant ageing potential. Its balance and structure ensure a graceful evolution over the coming years. To enhance your collection, you can buy Vega Sicilia VALBUENA 5° 2021 online directly from our shop.

Grapes: 96% Tinto Fino, 4% Merlot. Vines: ~35 years average. Aging: 5 years total in oak and bottle. Sugar: 1.5 g/L. ABV: 14%. The 2019 felt a little stern, with sharper tannins. This 2021 is a different story: it takes off almost instantly, opening with remarkable energy, polish and depth from the first glass. Vega Sicilia has truly outdone itself. It comes surprisingly close to Único in power and complexity, at roughly 40% of the price.

I think it was a short 30 mins decanting and showed up quite well. Quite prominent leather note with a dark chocolate, coffee like finish. [@Txispa]

Come on - where have you been all my life, mental wine. Aphrodite’s wide hips sashay out of sight and leave me high board diving inelegantly into the brooding glass, as all the daily demons scatter mid the soul-balming splash. Stop. Scent. Stay. A perfect stillness.

#Primum Familiae Vini walk around tasting in Montreal. Up next was Vega Sicilia who provided 3 wines for the tasting. The last wine was also very young. I would say give this one another 5 years minimum before opening, and it will rate 4.6 to 4.7. In the meantime, this has very high tannins and acidity, with flavours of blackberry, plum, leather, tobacco and oak. More age should give it more complexity.

From Magnum… Too young. Not showing full potential yet. I expected it to be a tad more approachable. Deep purple. Pronounced intensity but lacking the complexity you would expect from this rockstar wine. Give it some time. Guaranteed to come! 2021 is a strong vintage! 4.2*++

Vega Sicilia must be the most consistent producer, all there wines are outstanding, At all price points. The cooler fresh vintage shines through and is much better than week years for fruit profile. Black cherry & blackberry. Cedar, tobacco, vanilla and sweet spice. A little peppery. Fine tannins, med acidity, very long. Powerful yes but superb elegance and refinement. Blend **96% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo)** and **4% Merlot.**
