Termanthia 2017

Termanthia 2017 is a dry red wine from D.O. Toro, crafted by the Numanthia winery using Tinta de Toro grapes. It features a complex aromatic profile of blueberries, eucalyptus, and spices, balanced by a firm structure, noble tannins, and a fresh finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Tinta de Toro
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Toro
  • Winery: Numanthia
  • Soil / Altitude: Dry-farmed soils
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 20 months in French oak

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from centenarian vineyards with vines over 120 years old, cultivated under dry-farming conditions and organic practices. The region's continental climate and very low yields result in fruit of exceptional concentration and varietal character.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest and cold maceration, fermentation takes place in French oak vats and stainless steel tanks. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels and ages for 20 months in French oak.

Why buy it

If you are looking for a cellar-worthy wine with great aging potential, this is an ideal choice. Its elegant structure makes it the perfect match for game dishes and mature cheeses. You can buy Termanthia 2017 online directly from our shop.

This was the epic wine of our El Capricho lunch and the wine was as great as the meat we had. This had clearly a bolder fruit power than the Victorino. However on a QPR basis, and costing about 5x the Victorino, we all agreed that this latter one would be our choice.

Historic Grandes Pagos de España tasting catch up notes for personal reference. 100% old vine Tinta del Toro aged 22m in new & 2nd use oak. Deep ruby. Very focused on the pronounced aroma intensity. Big, rich black fruit of blackberry, black cherry, violet, damson, dark chocolate covered cherry, baked raspberry, vanilla & sweet baking spice. Developing. Dry. Creamy blackberry, black cherry, vanilla & raspberry. M+ acid, high alc, m+ smooth tannins & a concentrated, velvety long finish w. violet & dark cocoa.

Termanthia stands out for its depth and finesse, representing the pinnacle of Numathia. Deep rubi. Intense, elegant aromas of cherries, blackberries, and blueberries, complemented by clove and nutmeg. Floral hints of violet plus lavender, rosemary, and eucalyptus. The wine delivers a sweet and fresh attack, full-bodied and generous, with velvety tannins. The long finish offers notes of black fruit, sweet spices, tobacco leaf, forest floor, showcasing a well rounded complexity. Will age well the next decades

Great depth and density! Liked this a lot, but took a few hours to open up. Made from very old vines (up to 200yrs old), very tannic but smooth, with the fullest body as they come. Notes of cherry, plum and blackberry, very fruity. Some oak, but the density of the fruit overpowers it. This wine should will be even better 10-20yrs from now, so I’ll need another bottle!

A truly exceptional, monumental Toro.
Explosive black fruit, spice, and mineral aromas. The palate is massively concentrated yet precise, with superb tannins and freshness. Deep, layered, and endlessly long. Outstanding in every way. [DFWE 25]

Medium + body with medium + to high tannins and a medium + acidity. Notes of cassis, black plum, dark chocolate, tanned leather and sweet spices. Still incredibly youthful with tight grippy tannins and a mouthwatering acidity, 5+ years more in the cellar is recommended.

deep purple med+ nose of jammy blackberry, raisins, eucalyptus, mint. smells like merlot med+ palate of juicy black fruits. quite ripe but not overpowering high acid, med+ grippy tannins. probably the best toro out there, so different from a rioja one might say it's the opposite. could have benefitted from more aeration, but the wine is probably at its peak now, with a long future ahead.

Cassis, black cherry, butterscotch on nose. Blackberry, sour cherry in dark chocolate on palate. Juicy lingering chokeberry finish with grippy tannins. See you in 5 years? :)

Same review! This Toro is spectacular! Precious ruby color. Dense wine, almost cuttable with a knife!!! Notes of red fruit, black fruit, and vanilla. Luscious wine, complex, velvety in the mouth, with black fruit and even floral notes. Long and spicy finish (peppery). A real powerhouse of a wine, a true gem

From Wine Spectator's New York Wine Experience back in October, this was evening #2 of the Critics' Choice Grand Tasting. The next wine was a beauty from the Toro region of 🇪🇸, the 2015 Termanthia from Bodega Numanthia. This is Tempranillo at its finest. Brief notes - black/red berries, soft leather, toasted oak & dark chocolate. Bodega Numanthia is named for the ancient Spanish town of Numanthia, which did not surrender to invading Roman forces, and was finally destroyed in 133 BC after a 20 year resistance.

Finally the jewel of Bodega Numanthia and what a unique experience! I know some criticize Toro style and I could care less. The bouquet begins with ripe blackberries, blueberries, pot-pourri spices, violets, lavender, rosemary and thyme. Later we get cassis, tobacco leaf and toasty, smoky cocoa notes. On the palate it is massive, ever so bold, unctuous, explosive and intense with silky tannins and balanced acidity. All the notes from the bouquet parade on the mouth plus black pepper, more cassis and a subtle⤵️

Powerful Tinta de Toro yet very smooth in the edges. It’s drinking wonderfully, crystal clear no sediment, long swirl across the taste buddies and eloquent finish. Ungrafted pre filoxera vines
