Scala Dei Masdeu 2018

This dry red wine from D.O.Ca. Priorat is a single-varietal Garnacha Tinta crafted by Cellers de Scala Dei. It offers an aromatic profile of violets, wild herbs, and blood orange, supported by a refined texture and well-integrated tannins.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Garnacha Tinta
  • D.O. / Region: D.O.Ca. Priorat
  • Winery: Cellers de Scala Dei
  • Soil / Altitude: Red clay and limestone, up to 800 m altitude
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 18 months in concrete and oak foudres

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from Masdeu, a historic vineyard planted on steep terraces along the slopes of the Montsant mountain, reaching altitudes of up to 800 meters. The terroir features red clay at the bottom and limestone soils at the top, with a southeast exposure.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Fermentation takes place with whole bunches in 3,500-liter concrete vats using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 18 months in a combination of concrete tanks and oak foudres.

Why buy it

A magnificent, historic single-vineyard Garnatxa Negra from Scala Dei in Priorat (2018). Deep ruby transitioning toward garnet at the rim, showing the early emergence of elegant tertiary notes on the nose. On the palate, it delivers a powerful, deeply layered, and complex structure driven by high, vibrant acidity, refined tannins, and exceptional depth. Concludes with a remarkably long, lingering, and spicy finish. A profound expression of historic Priorat terroir.

This wine changed my definition about Priorat - 100% Garnacha of a 650m altitude vineyard on red clay and chalk from 1945 - this was a very dry vintage resulting in 25% lower returns - still the output shows as a refined elegant red with some initial tertiary tones like balsamic vinegar. Abv 14,5%.

Start with sharp and deep aroma, such as leather, herb, and slight oak after then added cherry, elegant floral notes. Great balance with acidity and finish with long and fine tannins.

Bought 16/10/25 Ulisses Ciutadella under B encouragement for a special bottle for PWB70 for club 7% discounted €100.30. Was between this and an Alabaster 2018 (>€200). Joan agreed this was better for now drinking. Drank at CadaDelCool 19-20/10/25 Antiquey, ripe berry fruit aromas with a flavourful palate

Best red wine of the Ibiza holiday and in the top 3 of my best Spanish red ever. Old vine Grenache aged in concrete vats if I remember it correctly. Clean ripe fruit and a super balanced tannin structure. Will definitely buy this for my cellar. The company of my dear wife @[1|12938078|Saskia Foesenek] may have amplified the experience even more 🥰

100% garnacha from a single files like it’s brother wine St Antoni. Concrete tanks no barrel fermentation. Fruit forward full bodied. Earthy, a bit acidic still even though almost 7 years in bottle. Name means masía of God because the field is at such a high altitude. red fruit minerals black fruit cherry raspberry earthy savory pepper

I loved this Priorat! Lean and red fruited Garnacha from limestone soil instead of shale, old vines at 800 masl, whole cluster, fermented and aged in concrete. Translucent violet. Strawberries, red currant, lingonberries, bramble and earthy spice. M bodied, dry, M+ acidity, fine silky tannins, balanced and elegant, long finessed mineral finish with a touch of salinity. As soon as I tasted it I asked if it was from limestone soil! 🥰

Where St Antoni wine’s flavor leaves quickly…Masdeu wants to stay and fight on the tongue. Great flavor, hangs around a while. Favorite of the line up we tried from Scala Dei.

On Tuesday we also opened a Magnum of this which is the very real first historical winery of Priorat. Their wines were not at par with Palácios, Obac, Barbier but quality has improved fast and this is a 100% Grenache from 30-40 yr vines coming from the Argile-Calcarios soils (not the xist one which is a different bottle). Great cranberry fruit, very balanced acidity, complex and long. A bit heavier than I would expect but still a great wine.

Scala Dei Masdeu Priorat 2016. 100% pure Grenache from vines planted in 1974 at 800m. Nose of redcurrant and cherry. Body has a lovely bramble quality to it, with some refined tannins and a long long finish of underripe blackberry and sloes. This has an incredible fruit purity to it. Maybe my favourite Grenache?????

A very bright style of Garnacha, which is quite surprising to say the least, while i actually liked their Middle end Cartoixa better, this one will surely age better. Very red fruit driven ( cherry cola, raspberry, strawberry ), licorice, floral ( rose petal, saffron ), integrated oak, tar, sweet tobacco.

Wine tasting at Scala Dei, Priorat. Single vineyard. Mas Deu means farmhouse of God. 100% Grenache from limestone soil. Warm vintage. Fermented in concrete and aged in concrete and oak. Fermented with some ripe stems. 14 months aging. Light ruby coloured with a nose of ripe strawberries, ripe raspberries and spices. Full bodied with marked framing tannins and powerful ripe fruit. Medium acidity. Nice medium finish with some warmth from the 14.5%. Lovely wine.

Mas Deu - ‘Farmhouse to God’? Grown on their highest altitude vineyard, on limestone. 2017 was a dry and hot vintage. Spent 6m in old oak. Riper fruit, but still elegant. 14.5% abv. Again not typical Priorat I would say, and perhaps that is the charm of Scala Dei.
