Jules Desjourneys Fleurie Les Moriers 2021

This dry red wine from the AOC Fleurie appellation in Burgundy is crafted exclusively from Gamay grapes by the Jules Desjourneys winery. It features aromas of ripe cherry, blueberries, and cedar, balanced by fresh acidity and well-integrated tannins.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Gamay
  • D.O. / Region: AOC Fleurie, Burgundy
  • Winery: Jules Desjourneys
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: High cellaring potential

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from biodynamically farmed vineyards in Beaujolais, where all work is performed manually. In the challenging 2021 vintage, a late harvest was required to achieve optimal and balanced ripeness of the fruit.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Vinification is carried out with extreme precision and gentle handling. This artisanal approach preserves the purity of the fruit, giving the wine a refined and deep structure.

Aged Fleurie. Mossy on the nose. Fruits aren't as lively, but still works as a base. Acidic 👌

Desjourneys Fleurie „Moriers“ 2020. Starts off quite perfumed, as it should. Palate begins radically tight, high acid, bit held back in complexity but hitting with an imrpessively tightened frontal force. Kicks my teeth in. The finish then super long, leaning brighter red fruit, though perfectly ripe. Fine oak in the background, beautifully incorporated already though showing just enough for its youth, a great job there. Overall the wine surely needs a moment of air, or a couple years age. But me likely! 4.4-5

Great wine! 👁 pale garnet color. 👃 dried cranberries, forest floor, cedar, pencil lead, dried cherry. 👅 dry, medium-high accidity, medium tannins, medium body, long aftertaste.

This Fleurie reveals an intense, deep ruby colour. The nose is characterised by aromas of black cherries and sweet pepper. Scents of violet and iris also emanate from this remarkable Fleurie. The palate is full of black fruit. This Fleurie exudes harmony, combining aromatic intensity and freshness. Magnificent bottle.

A beautiful Gamay with aromas of rich berries and plums with spices, rose 🥀 petals and carnal nuances with a long mineral finish.

Pale red colour. Complex nose of red fruit, strawberry, raspberry, sweet spices and rose petals. Balanced acidity. Enveloping core of fruit in the palate. It is a lovely wine.

Tastes best 1-2 hrs after pour. Blackberry, earthy, violet, banana. Too light to pair with Mapo Tofu but was good with Pad Kra Pow. Better to be drunk by itself. Not as acidic as Jean Foillard Cote du Py.

Fabien Duperray, a leading wine agent established in 07. Reviving the wines from the south to challenge the main Cote. Fabien hires up from 1 to 2 people per hectare – the double of what Leroy does. Fabien likes to extract his wines for the density and aging capacity. 100% stem and more new oak for the older vintages. 30% stems and unoaked since 15 (steel and glass). Releases the wines 10 years after. Ripe and extracted farmyard with savory spices. Mencia-like. Not a good reflection of the place for me.

Light with a nice mix of black fruit and red fruit with some earthy flavours adding complexity. We had this bottle with lunch at Arpege in Paris.

Wow, stunning wine. Absolutely what I love - farmyard, earth, mushrooms, dark berries; all over the show. Low abv (13%), very nicely aged. Could easily last a couple years more or even improve. It‘s a high quality but fun wine for wine geeks - cheers

Wild ride, for sure. Earthy mulch mushroom funk initially. Lots of tannins at first too. Softens a little after being open. Great with food. Probably the oldest cru Beaujolais I’ve tried, so this was a new experience. Lots of fun husky complexity.

Fleurie with some age on it. Way more pinot-esque than gamay-esque. Aged well with decent complexity here.

Rather ripe but made in a crackling and fairly funky style which makes it fresh and drinkable. Indeed very less austere and monolithic than other Desjourneys reds. Medium body with quite a round texture bursting with bubbly tones of sweet dark strawberry, peach juice, licorice and leather. It shows a nice precision with savory acidity, bitter tannins and subtle metallic hints, delivering fair lenght. Playful yet rather serious nose with big strawberry on front plus notes of leather, carob, charcoal and licorice.
