John Duval Eligo Shiraz 2018

A dry red wine from Barossa Valley crafted by the prestigious John Duval Wines winery. It features concentrated aromas of blackberry, plum, and spices, supported by a firm structure and a long finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: 100% Shiraz
  • D.O. / Region: Barossa Valley
  • Winery: John Duval Wines
  • Soil / Altitude: Variable altitude (Eden Valley and Barossa Valley)
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 18 months in French oak barrels, 15-year aging potential

The vineyard

The fruit is sourced from selected vineyards in the premium subregions of Eden Valley, Ebenezer, and Moppa. Combining seventy percent Eden Valley fruit with thirty percent Barossa Valley fruit balances high-altitude freshness with lowland concentration.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Fermentation takes place by parcel in small stainless steel tanks with daily pump-overs to optimize extraction. The wine is then aged for eighteen months in fine-grained French oak barrels.

Dark ruby. A nose of juicy blackcurrants, blackberries and vanilla. Purity. Juicy, prickly baking spice and well integrated tannins into this ripe, bolder Shiraz. Enjoyable with the 2021 vintage drinking now with the tannins evened out

Sunday dinner had lamb cutlets on the menu. This called for a red wine companion and Eligo answered. Deep ruby coloured with a beautiful nose of dark cherries, dark plums, blackberries and well integrated oak. Full bodied with silky elegant mouthfeel. Well integrated smooth tannins and medium acidity. Potent generous fruit. Lovely long finish. Such a lovely drop. Barossa Shiraz made by a master.

Deep ruby with a purple hue. The nose is pronounced, showing intense aromas of blackberry, plum, dark cherry, black pepper, liquorice, dark chocolate, and well-integrated oak. The palate is dry, full-bodied with firm ripe tannins and balanced acidity. Concentrated dark fruit and spice lead to a long, powerful finish. Made by a winemaker formerly at Penfolds, this wine is structured, complex. Quality: Outstanding

Sensational. Bramble fruit nose that carries to the palate. Elegant wine that glides through the mid palate leading to a long quite complex finish with perfect vanilla oak notes.

Pours a mild purple with low lacing. Dark berry note sin the nose with currants and raspberry. Medium to light body with hints of velvety notes at the back. Soft red fruit throughout with little to no tannins. Rather restrained but still elegant.

Elegant expression of Barossa Shiraz (typically source 2/3rds of the fruit from old vineyards in Barossa Valley, with the balance from Eden Valley). Aged in oak for 18months - 55% new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300 litre) and the balance older, seasoned hogsheads. Aromas of rich black and blue fruit with hints of anise and clove. Hints of spice and licorice and finishes with integrated, fine tannins. Also some earthy savouriness and smoked meat flavours. Great complexity, excellent wine. Deep and intense.
