Château Malescot St. Exupéry Grand Cru Classé 2023

Château Malescot St. Exupéry Grand Cru Classé 2023 is a dry red wine from the prestigious AOC Margaux appellation in Bordeaux. It features a medium body with fine, polished tannins, accompanied by aromas of red currant, raspberry, and subtle floral notes of lavender and dried roses.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot
  • D.O. / Region: AOC Margaux, Bordeaux, France
  • Winery: Château Malescot Saint Exupéry
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 14–16 months in new oak barrels

The vineyard

The winery's vineyards cover 28 hectares distributed across five selected plots within the Margaux commune. These historic lands allow for precise cultivation that reflects the true character of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot varieties.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts and gentle pump-overs. The wine is then aged for 14 to 16 months in new oak barrels and bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its natural structure.

Lovely wine. Medium bodied. Medium tannins, becoming soft after being open for a while. Lovely balanced taste of berries, some leather, fruit, very subtle touch of oak. Good to drink on its own or with food.

From the weekend. JS 97pts. The 2022 Château Malescot St. Exupéry (~$70) is an opulent Margaux Third Growth composed of 55% Cab, 40% Merlot, and 5% PV crafted by winemaker Jean-Luc Zuger. Tracing its roots to 1608, this historical estate once belonged to the grandfather of aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and is renowned for its gravel slopes. Blackcurrant, blueberry, and plum with violet, sandalwood, and smoke. Medium- to full-bodied, lush, and velvety with seamless tannins and a racy, persistent finish.

96/100. Cassis, cigar box, cedar, violet, and smoke on the nose. On the palate, rich blackberry and crème de cassis with some violet and some spice. Powerful tannins that soften nicely with a couple hours, fantastic acidity, and a long finish.

Classic cool-vintage Margaux. Excellent aromatics, every sniff something different: cassis, blackberry, violets, cedar, licorice. Not profound on the palate, a bit lacking in concentration and power but refined, with restrained oak and balanced acidity and fine grained tannins. 2021 vintage comes through, lean and fresh, verging on green. Not the glossiness I was expecting from Malescot. Reminded me of ‘07 and ‘14 vintages. Surprisingly drinkable now with air, but will hit its stride in about 5 years. 92 points

Perswijn UGCB 2026. Nicely balanced from the start, with clear fruit and a gentle floral lift typical of Margaux. The palate feels juicy and open, making the wine easy to enjoy. Still, the structure remains somewhat light.

Currently enjoying the 2021 vintage. Light ruby color. Bright red fruit plus a hint of leather on the nose. Very dry, lots of acid and tart red fruit on the palate.

A Cab Sav dominant Bordeaux blend with Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot from the left bank Margaux area of France. A dark crimson ruby colour with a nose and flavours of dark berries, cherry and plum with hints of its French oak barrel aging. Fairly soft on the tongue and just on the dry side with a not quite bold body texture. Rather an enjoyable experience.
