Château La Fleur-Pétrus 2017

This dry red wine from the prestigious AOC Pomerol is a Merlot-dominant blend crafted by Château La Fleur-Pétrus. It offers aromas of ripe plums, dark raspberries, and spices, balanced by a medium body, structured tannins, and a long mineral finish.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot
  • D.O. / Region: AOC Pomerol, Bordeaux
  • Winery: Château La Fleur-Pétrus
  • Soil / Altitude: Gravelly soil
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 16-18 months in French oak barrels

The vineyard

The estate's vineyards are situated on gravel-rich soils in the eastern part of the appellation. The vines, averaging 35 years of age, benefit from excellent natural drainage, which contributes to the concentration and refinement of the fruit.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a hand-harvest with double sorting, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vats. The wine is then aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels to develop its complexity.

Why buy it

Its balance of freshness and structure ensures a graceful evolution over the coming years. *** Dark ruby red in colour with aromas of dark fruit, brown sugar, leather, and oak. On the palate, notes of brown sugar, leather, and oak stand out. The medium acidity and tannins create a well-balanced, bold yet silky-smooth red wine with a long finish. Delicious. (Note: Blend of 80-90% Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, aged in up to 50% new oak for 14-20 months, 14.5% ABV)

My first La Fleur-Pétrus since the wonderful 1975 to mark my 50th birthday last year. I am immediately struck by the similarities, the rich plummy black fruit, the mint, iron and printing ink. The same lovely violet top notes too. Smoky oak, green leaf, damp earth, a bit of cocoa. Velvet texture, appproachable high(-) tannins, high acidity. Definitely drinkable now, this is delicious. I love the decadence of Pomerol and would be delighted to make it a regular drink every Monday evening!

Happy Bordeaux Sunday everyone. Part 1 of Top Tier claret Tasting Kit from the UK Wine Society, sent to me (as part of 4 kits) as a Birthday present from my daughter @[1|30712744|Anne Nelson] who lives in London earlier this year. Another wine that’s been on my wishlist for a while and glad to finally try it. Floral blackberry, plum, black cherry, oak, tobacco, leather and licorice spice. Loved the long finish on this wine. It’s still tight and too young really

Part of TWS tasting kit. Deep purple with plum and slight espresso aromas. High tannins with medium to full body and medium alcohol. Flavours of plum, and bitter morello cherry. Did not really do it for me and much preferred the Leoville Barton. Probably needs more time to integrate and a little bit more decant time. More planning or restraint needed with a 200ml sample verse a bottle.

Part of the Wine Society Top-Tier Claret Tasting Kit. I love a Pomerol. 👁️ Deep garnet‑purple with a glossy, youthful sheen. The core is dense and opaque, fading to a vibrant ruby rim. 👃 Beautifully layered - plum blackberry soil, truffle with a bit of espresso and aniseed. 👅 Medium to full‑bodied with silky, refined tannins. Bursting with black and blue fruits. 💷❎✅✅Typically sits in the £180–£250 range per bottle in the UK market. That’s lot of moolah … but it is very good.

Refined Pomerol with quiet confidence. Deep ruby. The nose shows plum, black cherry, floral notes and subtle truffle. The palate is silky and precise, with fresh acidity and polished tannins. Elegant and layered rather than powerful, finishing long and smooth. Very classy.

Deep ruby. Pronounced intensity of raspberry, cherry, leather, tobacco. Gentle tannin after three hours bottle breath. Good and high acidity. Long finish.

Amazing Bordeaux with a welcoming nose and soft tannins. Paired wonderfully with our NY Strip 🥩 at Morton’s in The Horshoe Casino 🎰 in St Louis, MO. I think I got the #DealOfTheCentury on their price point 🤫 #MoriartyParty #Cheers 🍷

Excellent but has plenty room to mature. Black fruit (plum, black current) balanced by healthy oak and tobacco topped with vanilla. Notable acidity makes for a round finish

I would not want to drink currently as this is so young it’s ridiculous. However, I can tell it will almost certainly be a show stopper. 20 years I would say to become the wine it can be, currently incredibly closed and chewy.

Young, youthful and supremely structured. Quite taut, but completely coats the mouth, all seems to be there. Black fruits, cigar box. A well done wine. Tasted at a TWS event.

2017. Textbook of a great Pomerol. Already of great charme and enjoyment, despite the young age. Plum, cherry and cassis, with a floral note and very delicate oak spices. The palate is deep, plush and generous. Impressive definition and great, long, sexy finish. 94+/100

A double decant with a few hours in the decanter before going back in the bottle for a few more. Still, this was a tightly wound wine brimming with tension. Iron, blackberry, earthy notes, minerality, plum and some seriously austere tannins. Makes me think a few more hours of air would have been useful. Still, the tension, elegance and precision were all very welcome and demonstrated the quality of this wine now and to come.
