Suertes Del Marqués El Esquilón 2021

A dry red wine from the D.O. Valle de La Orotava, crafted from the Listán Negro grape. It offers aromas of red berries, herbal hints, and dried flowers, supported by a firm structure, defined tannins, and fresh acidity.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Listán Negro
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Valle de La Orotava
  • Winery: Suertes del Marqués
  • Soil / Altitude: Volcanic, clay, and sandy loam soils at 450–550 meters altitude
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 12 months in 500-liter oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes are sourced from a single 0.9-hectare plot situated at an altitude of 450 to 550 meters with a northern exposure. The volcanic soils combine clay and sand, hosting old vines with an average age of 80 years.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Alcoholic fermentation takes place in unlined concrete vats using 100% whole clusters. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages for 12 months in 500-liter oak barrels.

Why buy it

This dry red wine is an ideal choice for those wishing to explore the unique character of Canary Islands' volcanic terroirs. Its freshness and complexity make it an excellent addition to your private cellar. 100% Listan Negro from vines 80-+ years old at 450-550m altitude on volcanic soil. Whole bunch fermentation and 12 months in 500L neutral French oak barrels . Smoky volcanic notes, cherry, rose petal, raspberry and light oak on the nose. In the mouth, sour cherry, raspberry, cedar. Med+ acidity and high tannins. Probably need a bit more time for the tannins to settle, but enjoyable and interesting.

Smoky, dusty qualities due to volcanic soils, yet somehow so delicious. Structured tannins with a strong drying effect in the mouth

Christmas Eve at the in-laws 🎄 This was one of my gifts for my father-in-law (who was born on Tenerife) years ago. It's a difficult style, and it needs much air, but we had only a few hours... the last drops were the best! Very sulphuric (reduced or volcanic if you want), meaty, with fresh liquorice, orange juice, red cherry, mint and stalks. More iron and tea with time. High acid and gum-coating chalky tannins. More red fruit and grapefruit on the palate but most didn't like it at all. 4.0 13% abv.

Suertes del Marqués horizontal degustation. Excellent representative of single vineyard wine perfectly representing volcanic terroir (and great potential!). 100% Listan Negro from 80-100 yo vines planted at 0.9 ha El Esquilon plot at 450-550 m asl in La Orotava (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands) fermented with whole bunches in open top concrete and aged for 13 months in 500 l oak barrels. Dark crimson colour with pale rims. Aroma of barnyard, goat excrements and violet, later tea rose and current leaf 🔽🔽🔽

Dinner wine. Very interesting stuff this. Single vineyard 100% Listan Negro from a 1ha plot, 80 yo vines on volcanic soils. This has got some age and is really intriguing on the nose. Hard to describe at first. Rusty, old boat house, but with air more fragrant with violet and sea breeze. Quite a combo! On the palate it is bright at crisp, lean fruit profile, again with that iron rusty thing, but so light and fresh and drinkable. Really fascinating stuff and this winery does not stop to surprise me. Need more!

Red berries dancing on a crater rim. Very reductive at first and definitely needed a good 1-2 hours in the decanter. But the wait was worth it. White pepper, game like leather notes, smoke, minerals and a whiff of oregano on top of red cherry. Some bell pepper after more time in the glass. The palate leads with sour cherry and cranberry, super high and tense acidity before diving headfirst into saline like minerality, rocky scoria and more pepper. Herbaceous notes. Fragile light body but quite rustic notes

📊 90/100 Nice Natural style wine: some oxidation notes was offered, pronounced red berries and tomato + eucalyptus nuances. The palates gives woody tannins (fermentation with stems) and a lot of minerals, key note plays cranberry. Tenerife could provide a lot of expression.

Wild nose. Bit of Brett here too with that barnyard aroma (does abate somewhat with a lot of air). Doesn't kill the wine but does detract slightly. Underneath that red fruit, minerality, ash, decently long finish, high acidity and good drive. Would like to try more but guess it'll be a bit of a cork lottery 🥺 Very fun and different all up. NB: Cork had quite a bit of seepage for 5 years and partially sunk into bottle. Not sure how much longer you'd want to risk it just fyi

Red wine from Tenerife (drunk in Lola Restaurant in Maspolamas) … a perfect accompaniment to meat … medium to full bodied … bold with medium tannins … with red fruit, minerality, cherry and pepper on the palette. Improves markedly for being left before drinking. Wonderful.

Still young, but already very good - if you like structured, light reds. M+ red currant, raspberry, stone, struck matches, iron and ash. M+ acid, M+ tannins, M alcohol, M- body (but only before the structure kicks in) and M+ finish. If you like Sangiovese or Nerello Mascalese, you should try this.
