Stéphane Ogier Saint-Joseph Le Passage 2021

This dry red wine made from Syrah comes from the AOC Saint Joseph region, crafted by the Stéphane Ogier winery. It features a medium body with aromas of forest fruits, violets, and sweet spices, balanced by silky tannins and a fresh acidity.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Syrah
  • D.O. / Region: AOC Saint Joseph
  • Winery: Stéphane Ogier
  • Soil / Altitude: Steep slopes

The vineyard

The grapes are grown on the steep slopes of the AOC Saint Joseph appellation in the northern Rhône Valley. The vineyards benefit from optimal sun exposure and soils that impart a distinct mineral character to the wine.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

The winery practices parcel-by-parcel vinification, fermenting the grapes from each plot separately to preserve the unique identity of the terroir. A meticulous blending process follows to reflect the true character of the vintage.

A well-crafted Syrah, elegant and structured. Black fruit, black olive, subtle bacon notes and licorice. The tannins are fine, and the palate is powerful. In this particular vintage, the wine is approachable in its youth while offering aging potential.

Dark fruit, likely blackberry. Mellow on the palate but perhaps too mellow. Doesn’t have the complexity I was looking for, but I was likely looking in the wrong place.

Dinner in Paris last night with the Jim Barry legends & my fab teammates. No notes, just enjoyed these wines in the moment and logging from memory. A wine I’m very familiar with & exactly in line with expectations w. good purity of crunchy black cherry, blackberry & raspberry w. hints of black pepper & black olive rotundone Rhone x-factor. Smooth w. good ripeness & well integrated tannins with a pleasing crunch to the black & red cherry fruit that keeps the balanced, fresh & really enjoyable.
