Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello 2022

This dry red wine comes from the prestigious AVA Santa Cruz Mountains in California. It features an aromatic profile of blackberry, blackcurrant, tobacco, and limestone mineral notes, accompanied by polished tannins and firm acidity.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc
  • D.O. / Region: AVA Santa Cruz Mountains (California)
  • Winery: Ridge Vineyards
  • Soil / Altitude: Limestone soils, mountain slopes
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 21 months in oak barrels

The vineyard

The grapes originate exclusively from the historic Monte Bello vineyard, located on the mountain slopes of Santa Cruz. The limestone soils of the area contribute a distinct minerality and freshness to the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc vines.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts using whole berries selected from 18 distinct parcels. The wine is then aged for 21 months in oak barrels, predominantly American, which provides structure while maintaining its fruit identity.

Extremely dry and very Bordeaux-like in style. The wine finishes with noticeable acidity, but in a pleasant and well-integrated way. Surprisingly austere and very dry overall, with a serious, structured profile.

Delish. Needs to sit longer or be decanted for a few hours. This will be a real show stopper 5-10 years from now.

It is time for my #FridayCabernetfix. Dark ruby in color with a purple rim. Beautiful nose and medium plus in body with medium plus acidity. Dry on the palate with nice complexity. Showing red and black fruits with cedar, licorice, chocolates, herbs, light earth, spices, tobacco leaf, dark coffee and light green vegetables. Spicy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. More in comments >>>>⬇️

Not showing much yet but always beautifully made. Decant for at least 5 years right now. A weak vintage but a strong wine.

I’ve never had this young, and I get it’s not near ready, but I liked how overt this wine was. Lots of oak and big ripe black fruit. I also got cedar and vanilla. Loads of everything with really no balance yet, but enjoyable now if not in a classic Monte Bello way. 92-93.

Notes of blackberries, black currant, red cherries, herbs and toasted oak. Very dry with high acidity and firm fine-grained tannins. Flavorful, structured and lean.

Big wine, very rich, voluptuous, dark fruit. We opened a magnum, shared with family around a big table in Lake Tahoe, and it was outstanding and certainly a hit with everyone.

#9598. Classic. Highly impressive. Full bodied and concentrated, but also very elegant. Multilayered complex structure. Expressive. Present fine tannins, fruity acidity. Dark fruit - cassis, blackberry, smoke, toast, nutty notes, mint and eucalyptus. Orange peel. Oak, cedar, black pepper and green bell pepper. It’s easy to understand the reputation of this beautiful wine! Obviously this is still just a baby with tremendous aging potential.

Wow! What a beautiful Bordeaux blend by Ridge! Seductive nose with eucalyptus, cedar, oak, some red bell pepper, cigar box, a bit of cinnamon & vanilla and juicy red & black fruit followed by a smooth palate with perfect acidity, constructive dry tannins, masterfully integrated oak, rosebud tea, juicy red & black fruit, vanilla, menthol and endless finish.

Drank a 375 in 2025. Enjoyed. I’m sure this will improve with age. Still big and oak driven.

Still very young and underdeveloped, but the pedigree and elegant Ridge style is evident. Legendary Montebello Cab, dark ruby colour, restrained, not overripe like most US wines, classic aromas of cassis, blackberry, dark chocolate and noble oak. The latter is well integrated. The tannins are almost mature, full body, good acidity, firm structure, complex, must be cellared for 5 years at least.
