Pago de Carraovejas Cuesta de Las Liebres 2019

This dry red wine from D.O. Ribera del Duero is a single-varietal Tempranillo crafted by the Pago de Carraovejas winery. It features a concentrated profile with notes of blueberries, blackberries, sweet spices, and graphite, supported by a full-bodied structure and polished tannins.

Key facts

  • Grape variety: Tempranillo
  • D.O. / Region: D.O. Ribera del Duero
  • Winery: Pago de Carraovejas
  • Soil / Altitude: Limestone marl with chalky outcrops, 850-900 m altitude
  • Ageing / Cellaring potential: 24 months in French oak barrels, high cellaring potential

The vineyard

The grapes originate from a unique parcel of just over three hectares, situated at an altitude of 850 to 900 meters. The vines grow on steep slopes with limestone marl soils and chalky outcrops, which give the vineyard its distinct identity.

Ideal combination

Winemaking

Following a manual harvest and double selection, the must is moved by gravity into small wooden vats for fermentation. The wine is then aged for 24 months in new, extra-fine grain French oak barrels.

Why buy it

If you are looking for an outstanding wine for cellaring to enrich your collection, this bottle represents the ultimate expression of a unique terroir. Its complexity and solid structure ensure an excellent evolution in the bottle over the coming years. You can buy Pago de Carraovejas Cuesta de Las Liebres 2019 online directly from our shop.

D ⤵️: WOWOWOWOW: It doesn't get any better than this. A world-class wine from a small, single vineyard. Everything about it is simply perfect. Grandiose, well-rounded, and delightful. Texture, length, acidity, tannins—everything is perfect. WOWOWOWOW: Besser geht nicht. Ein Weltklassewein aus einer kleinen Einzellage. Hier ist einfach alles perfelkt. Grandios, rund und herrlich. Textur, Länge, Säure, Tanninspur, alles perfekt.

A touch less bold than the 2018. But otherwise this is big and powerful stuff. oak blackberry black fruit. Complex but smooth. Tannins are mostly gone just enough to remind you this is fairly juvenile

The Cuesta de las Liebres is a pure Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) from a single vineyard with calcareous loam soil in the Ribera del Duero. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in French oak barrels. Deep cherry red in colour, with dark fruit and tobacco on the nose. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with juicy fruit and a very long finish. Quiet expensive.

The nose is intense ripe black cherry, blackberry and cassis, layered with graphite, cocoa, sweet tobacco and subtle balsamic notes. On the palate it is fluid with dense but polished tannins framing concentrated dark fruit, dark chocolate and sour cherry. The mid-palate shows notable freshness for its power, driven by balanced acidity that keeps the wine focused and linear. Texture is velvety yet firm. This single-vineyard expression (100% Tinto Fino/Tempranillo) from stony limestone soils at 850m altitude displays an opaque ruby-black hue. The nose reveals black cherry, graphite, violets and crushed rock. The palate delivers a monumental yet precise structure – ultra-fine tannins carry layered flavors of blackberry, licorice and cigar box, shaped by 20 months in French oak (60% new). The eternal finish shows espresso and mineral complexity.

Complex, big, structured, long. Nothing to not love about this - dark fruits, luscious cherry, milk chocolate, firm tannins, great refreshing acidity, a hint of coconut, vanilla, but very subtle. Not fat or overpowering but pushing, full of character and layers.
